There are 2 inches of new snow on my porch - nice change from the rain we have been having. The forecast looks great.
News from Canaan: They are getting ready to blow more snow, adding ample coverage after the expected 6 inches.
News from Timberline: There is still plenty of natural snow under the lift. I spent 4 hours making laps on Thunderdraft.

Well, that is good news... BUT, here's even better news:
The forecast calls for sunshine on Wed. Snow is falling (Monday night), more snow on Tue, you will take a day off, you will arrive to find blue skies with intermitent sunshine on Wed.

What else do you want?

Ok Budro..What does TGV stand for?..T-hank G-od for the V-alley?..T-he G-reat V-alley...T-he G-reat V-alleyer..T-our G-uide for V-alley...Why not change it around to TVG..T-he V- alley G- :)od?..ok that was too intense..The Valley Guru....Get some improvements to both ski areas Infastructure & add the H2 corr & you won't need to hype no more..It'll be a done deal!

PS..I used to hype Canaan valley for years while living in the DC Area...up & down all the Elevators as a Courier & to anyone who would listen & calling all the weather Folks to get them to mention the Valley in thier F-casts!

I was suprised when I was up there this weekend and came down 42 to Scheer how much of the grading was done to 93 on corridor H. I could see a bridge thru the clouds just south of Greenland Gap. So it is moving along.

Lets hope it gets done before Byrd is retired. Tea baggers will kill the road to no where real quick.

Encouraging to hear that KT!....
I mentioned when I posted the "Winters Back" thread that we could see some heavier Snows for the end of this week & thought that the Storm was concentrating South of the Mason/Dixon & that SS looked to be the Bullseye..Then all heck broke loose in the weather world with Huge Dump amounts & ACCU even was calling for up to a foot for the DC area...
I'm waiting to hear from the Pros to confirm & I hope what I'm seeing is wrong but the Storm looks to me to be even going further south cry North Carolina anyone??...I could bolt for NC easy since I live down here but I'm still hoping for a model correction to get me back up to the Valley!!!

The latest model has the bullseye just west of Richmond but there's a good bubble over SS/Canaan. 14" ain't bad...and that would be before the wrap around snows kick in.

Thats the 12Z model Murphy..ck out the 18Z sick cry A very cold shot of air that wasn't in the cards earlier looks to be shoving the system south..that cold shot will give the valley a little added upslope if that helps at all..at least its cold!

My link is actually live but it only updates every other run of the model. The totals have dropped a good bit, particularly on the northern fringe of the storm.

On the bright side, I believe these snow totals just take the liquid precip totals and multiply them by 10 to get snow totals. Hopefully the same cold that is pushing this storms south will increase the snow to liquid ratio.

Urrr right murphy..I was thinking that wintergreen might get a powder dump this time. The GFS has swung the moisture a little back north on the last run which as some of you weather watchers know can happen once the storm clears the Mountains & feeds on the atlantic...waiting for the 12Z update..wunder when your live feed will update Murphy?..guess we will find out..

It's been updated now. Further south and weaker. Here's the source I use: http://wintercast.tripod.com/id14.html

Wintergreen might be the winner. I was planning on being there Sunday afternoon after my daughter's swim meet in Orange but that might get canceled.

Thats kinda funny. I was at elk last weekend, TLine this weeked!

Im excited for this weekend but kinda worried about the drive up. Driving friday evening from State College, I know we will be fine until 219 past Oakland but after that it can get sketchy.

Yeah L-ski, I remember one time on the way to college in Elkins, and before I understood how the weather works over there, I went across 68 (then 48) to 219. Garrett County in MD then and now had excellent road crews, but when I hit the Welcome to WV sign on 219, I also ran into about 10 inches of unplowed snow on 219. The one good thing is that the road is not that curvey down to Thomas and from there in should be fine.

You and fishnski need to have a video cast on this site:

Thats how we protect our borders. It doesn't much matter if you on I79, 68 or comin down 219, in the winter you don't need a sign to welcome you to West Virginia.

Last weekend it was fog, so foggy, be careful langley. Ski races this weekend?

Guys like me are done-Toast...All those years trying to figure things out & giving friends & family f-casts (& quite a few over the Years for DCSKI..Weather you wanted it or not crazy) with just past experiences, radar watching & the little info you could get from the local TV Stations all with no Weather Channel or internet.. ..Its over Johnny! There was a time that you would have to at least interpet the Models but now they figure it out for you! As the Models get even better even the few tricks you learn about the biases & quirky things that they have done to help you out think the Man Made Brains will be thrown out the window.......A moment of Silence for one of the greatest DC TV weatherman of all time..Mr Gordan Barnes!
He did it the ole fasioned way & was GOOD.
That said..I'm thrilled to be able to get this great info on the Internet & I am predicting 3 to 20 inches for Canaan laugh...ok,ok...6 inches...who else wants to make one?

Finally seeing some consistency in the GFS model and the NAM moved the storm a little north in its last run putting it closer to the GFS's track. Although small, the difference in the track could be the difference between a good and an excellent day at Wintergreen.

Canaan got a couple of inches today per the whitegrass site..Thats the price the valley will have to pay for the cold shot that accompanied the Snow which will help keep the Storm south..Still hoping for some moisture to sniff out Canaan & give The Jewel of the Alpps a half foot!.. Models Still showing only 1 to 3 which isn't really worth mentioning especially when todays snowfall didn't get a mention.

Have you been CKing out the 5th thru the 7th on the GFS Murphy or anyone else?..I'll be up there then so I have been watching..There has been a storm popping up for a week but the model has placed it all over the place..it seems to be wanting to give the valley a good position for a goodin..Stay tuned!

Our area NWS guy mentioned the next storm but I haven't checked it out yet. He rarely discusses things that far out so there must be something to it.

Even though yesterday at this time the models had Canaan with 0 accum I'm still thinking (hoping) that the valley gets a half Foot..lets say 4 to 6. The Next storm next week is another tricky dickie with what looks like a snow track but the powers to be are saying that the cold air would have retreated north by then..I say Canaan will pull it off!!..Just like this storm..Canaan Valley..The Jewel of the WV Alpps (my new fav saying) Will defy the Model Gods & produce the Goods...Thats If we get a storm next week..Stay tuned confused

PS..NWS Tucker Co is calling for less than an inch...

I'll keep replying to myself crazy...The Snow started at daybreak but the radar looked like it was snowing since midnite..Dry cold air evaporated it before it landed. About 2 inches up at canaan allready & the three Cams that you can CK out up there show it coming down pretty good...That F-cast Limb that I went out on is getting covered in Snow!!..Canaan sniffs out Snow like the Cape fear River down here where I live sniffs out Hurricanes..

Sitting here in the Timberline lodge. We got 2-3 overnight at probably more than that so far today. It's hard to tell cuz the wind is blowing it everywhere. Makes for a few nice little stashes on some trail sides wink

the Drop is excellent. Soft and starting to bump up on the right and whales down the middle. Awesome skiing!!

I'd say tomorrow is going to be a good day in the Valley. Get here!!

10-12" on the ground here in Blacksburg and the flow is starting to swing around from the Northwest. Radar is showing snow showers from that direction and that's usually good for the WV mountains. Could be more to come for them.

The family and I are skiing Wisp on Sun/Mon. Their website says 5" of fresh. I skied there yesterday, and in some places you could still find some fresh, but in other places the snow was rock hard. They were blowing pretty hard on the Face & Main St, so hopefully with the new and manmade snow the conditions should be pretty good.

But then again, I might just end up in the valley for a few days. confused grin

Hey Murphy. That Grand Finale I was talkin about just barely nicked Canaan as it slid south & east but now it looks like it could give you a Grand Finale..thats if the Snow Band can make it over the WV/VA border Mtns..
You should think about scheduling a trip to Canaan next week SCWVA..That storm that I have been talkin about for awhile now (Week & a half?) looks like it might deliver..There are still some uncertainties though so ...STAY TUNED!

I'm embarrassed to say I've never made it to Canaan. I think it would really be my kind of place too. Snowshoe is an hour or so closer so we always end up there. Maybe once the kids are older.
