I'm heading back down to the Burg on Saturday. Trying to plant a bug in the wife's ear about going to the Shoe on Sunday. Don't know if it's going to happen. We've got an apartment FULL of stuff that needs put away and cleaned up. I can still hope can't I???

It's snowing steadily in Canaan Valley now. Probably 3 inches so far. Could have been a lot more if the whole first part yesterday hadn't been rain.

Curih, enjoy this weekend in the Valley. It is starting to look like it's going to be a pretty good one. I sure wish I could make it up that way.

Be sure to bundle up!

It's nice. Canaan Valley was boot deep on the sides of the trails today. But bitterly cold. We never managed more than 3 runs without going inside and quit around 2:30 when the wife's nose turned white.

I'm questioning whether I can get home tomorrow. My "all-season" tires aren't quite cutting it here. Already got stuck near our rental once. Made it to the mountain ok, but a lot of 32 wasn't down to pavement and I'm not sure I want to do another 50 miles of that to get back to the interstate.

You need to go 93 east to 42 North outside of Davis to Mt. Storm. Then take Rt. 50 down the mountain. Gets you out of the snow much quicker. Then just take 220 from Keyser to Cumberland to get on 68.

If you take 219 through Garrett County you will be in the snow forever.

Thanks, I'll try that. Google sent me a similar way on the way in (but down 93 bypassing Mt Storm). I was about to try 219 since it's 15 miles shorter to the interstate, but I'm glad you warned me.

Jon Jon's advice is sage. Get off the Front as fast as possible, 219 will just keep you in the weather longer. I made this mistake many times during my first year off college. As I have said before on other threads, many times I left Elkins when it was raging to see blue sky or the stars by Petersburg or Scheer depending on the route.

Just got back from the Valley. Heading back to VA by the southern route, there was basically no new snow beyond Seneca Rocks. The storm is raging up in the higher elevations. It was beautiful out there today.

Well, it was a tough decision and I hate to do it. But we're going to take advantage of the break in the weather this morning and bail before it picks up again this afternoon.

I always drop down 93 as fast as posible to Scherr..If you bear left on 42 to 50 you are up on the front longer. Once down at Scherr you are 1500' below the WV "Wild & wunderful & Knarly Outback" & 93 continues to 50 in a straight line...

PS..5 below 0 actual up at Canaan Hgts at 10 AM..9 mph wind out of the NW..Toasty crazy

I never take 93 if it is snowing. It turns into a white out arctic wasteland in about 15 minutes once it starts snowing. There is always wind and it always snows sideways up there. In 2001 I rolled a Jeep off 93 into the woods and ended up upside down and crushed against a tree. I crawled out and thumbed a ride into Davis where an ambulance took me to Oakland Hospital for overnight observation. The only lasting injury is a broken finger that didn't heal quite right. I am lucky to be alive. If it is snowing I take 68 and 219. It's long from N VA but never steep and never subject to white out where you can't see the road. 90% of the time I take Corr H/55 to Harman then 32N.

Glad you made it Denis -- scary story.

But it sounded like you described my daily drive when I'm between Silver Lake and Oakland on 219. Sideways snow and drifting.

I think one big differnce is that you feel totally isolated on 93 and having an accident like you did up there must have really scared the #$@@& out of you. I don't blame you if you never take 93 again.

It looks like some more interesting weather could be heading towards the WV highlands this weekend. Here's a link to a blog post about the potential storm:

Anyone want to wager a guess on snow accumulation in Canaan Valley now through the weekend?

If you look HERE , You will see that on top of Canaan Mtn, there is now 26 inches on the ground. But that doesnt make sense to me because yesterday morning there was 24, and they got 5 inches over night. But his measurement says 26.

Another 10-12 tonight thru sunday is my guess.

Gotta consider the snow ratio. The dryer the snow the more there is. However, the dryer it is the more apt it is to evaporate.

Compaction is really the issue with this fluffy snow.

Think about it. You have 5 fluffy inches on the ground, then you get another 5 inches on top of that -- what happens to the first five inches with the weight of the new five inches? Yep, it gets squished!

Even without new snow on top of fluffy snow, it gradually compacts. This effect is much less with lowland wet snow that most of us are accustomed to in our back yards.

Even out west if you don't get to the Powder when its fresh you can end up with what is left over...Mashed Potatoes!..Thats when its time to be groomed.
The Grand finale to this "Alpps blast" start yet Jonjon??..looks like it on the radar..

Canaan hgts obs say it started at 530..1 inch down..How much more to go?

Andy, here in Lewisburg we are getting NUKED. It seems a lot wetter than what we've been getting (its 26 degrees right now), but still isn't what I would call "wet" snow. It sure is slick. I hope the Toyota can make it up the mountain in the morning. Can't afford to miss even more class. And did I mention, I'm spending the weekend at the Greenbrier???
