A friend of mine just called to say that he drove through some wet snow going over Canaan Heights on his way to work. The Dolly Sods web cam appears to confirm this. Clicky

This is great news - the image however looks like fog (I didn't wait for the hi-res one however).

I'll take your friends word for it and celebrate anyway.

I waited for the hi-res to load - without question there are big snowflakes streaking across the picture.

I talked to someone today from the CV and they confirmed that it snowed and continues to snow here and there (as well as rain), but with no accumulation due to the warm ground temps.

Just to give another positive thought, a friend of mine who lives down in Cowen, WV (about 2 hours southwest of Canaan) which is at 2300 feet, was getting snow this morning.

It *IS* here.

Nice to know it's snowing over there.

I did little search and found this thread related to first snowing in Canaan Valley during October 2004.

Just another confirmation of snow....

Very very wet snow here today...For like 45 seconds it looked really cool...big flakes, and lots of them. Ground got white for a few seconds, then it started mixing with rain agian and it all melted...

Just sleet here in Blacksburg but It might be snowing higher up. The camera on Poor Mtn is frozen over. Probably a good indication it's sleeting.

We have a winter storm watch in the laurel highlands...

.WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 1400 FEET...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STATE COLLEGE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING.

A STORM SYSTEM OVER THE OHIO VALLEY WILL INTENSIFY AS IT MOVES JUST TO THE SOUTH OF PENNSYLVANIA TONIGHT. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EXPECTS THE RAIN TO TURN TO SNOW OVER THE MOUNTAINS OF WESTERN AND NORTHERN PENNSYLVANIA DURING THE EVENING HOURS.

THE ELEVATIONS ABOVE 1400 FEET WILL COOL MORE RAPIDLY...AND WILL SEE THE GREATEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS FROM THIS STORM. ACCUMULATIONS BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON COULD REACH 6 INCHES OR MORE IN THOSE HIGHER ELEVATIONS...WHILE THE VALLEY LOCATIONS SHOULD SEE A SLUSHY FEW INCHES OF SNOW.

THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF TO SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS ON TUESDAY. THE SNOW THAT FALLS DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS MAY NOT ACCUMULATE APPRECIABLY WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 30S.

Want to report that today it snowed and sleeted for a good 3 hours at school. No accumulation, but an excellent start!!! Currently it is 35 degrees with light mix and 20mph winds. A windchill of 24!

Temps to dip to 27 tonight. Plan to fire up guns if all goes well.

Snow, sleet, freezing rain and frizzle here in Blacksburg. The fact that we're getting frozen precipitation in late October can only be a good- no, GREAT- sign for the upcoming winter!!!

You know, for a second there I was starting to believe in global warming. Now I can stop worrying that garbage again until June.

Uhm, the ground is like 50* and wet. If it accumulates, you can count the minutes as it melts.

Snowmakers if you fire up the guns at least get us some pictures. we can use it as evidence that you were the first in the East to fire up the guns and put all the others to shame.

Hey, folks, remember when we were making winter predictions and I said that CV would get an inch or two in October followed by a 6, 8, or 10 inch snow before Thanksgiving? Looks like I was wrong. From the Weather Channel's forecast for Davis tonight:

"Periods of snow. Low 28F. Winds light and variable. Chance of snow 90%. Snow accumulating 6 to 10 inches."

So... did ANYONE predict a 6-10 inch snowstorm in October for CV? I can't remember, but if they did, they should get a beer from all of us for being prognosticator of the year!

It would be so freakin fantastic if we would actually get some freak, major snow event!!

I am as ready as I can be:

* freshly tuned skis
* season pass (7 springs)
* lodging
* ready and able chauffer
* and coicidently, I think I feel a rare flu setting in. One that prevents me from sitting at my desk for 8 hours.

Lets keep that snow coming!!!!!!!!!

Yeh,I predicted it...I just forgot to post it! Anyway I have been on record thru past posts that 8 times out of 10 there is snow on the ground during Halloween up in the Davis area. I guess its a little early this year.I predict a foot of snow up on MPC!...Did anyone catch Timberlines web cam note? The one that said that they were having problems with the cam but that it shouldn't be a big deal since there was no snow falling??!!? They are eating scrow balls right about now!

Usually is, only cure i know takes 4 months .

Now "they" are predicting snow for Wheeling. Wonder what one of these whatever this storm turns out to be would do in mid-November?

I know im not in davis, but here in Philippi (2000') Snowing all day...Still snowing....ground is white,(maybe 1/2" - 1") truck is covered, driveway is starting to get white on the edges...the ground is still way to warm...
I dont know what they are predicting locally, but the weather channel said 3-6. They are usually really low or really high, never right on...

An update for everyone rottin for me to flip the switch-

It'd be a miracle- Only 38 here. But it is spitting snow. Up to a trace possible here. I do have full expectations to do it this week. Im headed to the shoe tomorrow to hit that 8" in their cast

Then there is the possibility that I can make snow afterwards if not done tonight. The clouds are keeping it warm here, but then again, those clouds are bringing the snow.

Im torn.

The news that it was snowing at the shoe brought a big grin to my face on the commute home last night. This morning I woke up to big wet snow flakes falling in the Shenandoah Valley near Skyline Drive. I'm off today; I wouldn't even have to call in sick to go skiing.

Hope I don't regret it but I'm waiting for tomorrow. It should remain cold and continue to snow today in the higher elevations. Tomorrow will start to warm up but early it should be good. Chip's report is not coming up today and my email call to him has not been answered. I wonder if his server is down. My wife's business lost their website and email yesterday; the server is in FL.
The sods webcam is painfully slow and not worth much because it doesn't show the ground. I think I remember a better one last year, that viewed T'line, CV and WG from Canaan Heights. I foolishly did not bookmark it. Anyone have the link? Meanwhile the site I am relying on is;

Chip's web site must be down because I keep checking it for info. If you end up calling him, can you give us a report on Whitegrass conditions?

I should have thought of that John but didn't. I don't make calls like that on a govt. phone, I use my cell. However the cell is packed with my ski stuff in Burke at the VRE station. Based upon that doppler radar loop that I posted earlier it looks good, so I will probably give it a go.

Plans? Hey man, I'm a skier. (Paraphrasing Chip on organization) My only plan is to call Chip in the AM. If he isn't there or can't ski, I'll strike out on my own, probably from CV because it holds snow better than TL. If Chip is not there and the barbed wire is up I would not go on his property.
