Firsthand Report: Liberty
By a DCSki Reader

The January heat wave produced good spring skiing today at Liberty. By midday, previously hard patches had softened considerably. The downside to this was some piles of mushy snow on the two backside trails open - Heavenly and Ultra. After sundown the snow hardened a little bit and was faster but was still soft. Mushy “Ego Bumps” had formed on Upper Ultra and were very skiable.

The warm weather brought a lot of people to the mountain. Lift lines were long, but tolerable. Skier traffic was also heavy in a few places until about 5:00 p.m.

The base has held up pretty well to the abuse. Some brown patches appeared on Adventure Alley - site of the old half pipe. Very late in the day cover was very thin in a few spots on the unloading ramps of the backside chairs. Rock skis were not needed today and probably will not be required on Saturday. If this weather keeps up, they might be needed on Sunday.
