Did anyone here check out Timberline this weekend? Did the rain hold off very long yesterday?
I checked out Massanutten this morning - did two runs and then bailed out. It was by far the worst conditions I've ever skied on in my entire life - the entire mountain was one solid sheet of ice!
It rained from 11:30 through the whole evening. It wasn't a fun day to be skiing. Today was better though. Temps in the low 20's and dropping also some natural & man made too..
Blue Knob yesterday,
after the blue radar went too far north
I went to Winterplace this afternoon. Wouldn't call it the worst conditions of my life but it wasn't real pretty.
On the brighter side, I did make some progress on getting my 7 year old over her fear of the lifts.
Did you entice her with a beer a the midmountain lodge?

Guess I lucked out deciding to take the day bus to W'green instead of driving to W'place. It wasn't bad, although not too many trails to choose from. We spent most of the morning on Dobie while it was relatively empty, which was fast enough to feel more like a blue run than green. Tyro wasn't open yet and another run over there was used for racing most of the day. Highlands only had one route. Everything was flat and slick, but I convinced my daughter to take a few runs. She'd been over there last spring when everything was really soft. Today it took a lot more work, but she never fell or lost control.
Had a chance to meet up with GRK, which was a plus. Now that I know about the Sunday bus deal from C&R Sports, we'll probably do that again. $90/person for liftie and bus transportation from Hillsborough 5:30am to 8:15pm. I like being able to sleep instead of drive after a day of skiing.
It was fun meeting MarzNC at WTG. The kids had a snack together and I was talked into skiing down Cliffhanger, which I had not ventured on before.
Late in the afternoon they opened Sunrise again. It must have been torn to shreds by the racers because they spent a long time grooming it. It worked out though because by that time everything else was starting to ice over.
Ski Patrol was pretty aggressive in the slow zones as well which was nice to see.
TLine was great Saturday morning. I skied from about 8-10:30 and the slopes were in great shape. Went in before it started to rain. I was hopeful for Sunday, but the fog and frozen corduroy were not a lot of fun.
It was much better further north. I was at Elk. Saturday was good, though there was ice just below the surface from Thursday's ice storm. Started to snow about midday and they got about 4 inches overnight.
Sunday we didn't quite make first chair, but the first 3 or 4 runs were the best I've ever had in PA. It was that kind of beautiful snow where your skis are completely silent. Started to get a little scraped off in places after lunch, but still a lot of fun.

I didn't use it to entice her but it play a role in my motivation for wanting to get her on a lift.

Saw your trip report. The snow quality looked much better at Wintergreen than Winterplace. WP had plenty of white(ish) stuff on the ground but it was more glacial-like than snow-like. They had quite a bit of rain on Saturday and temps were in the mid-20's on Sunday. Bad combination.
Oooh fun stuff. Park City looks like it's hit a little freeze-thaw cycle, just in time for my first ski trip. Yay. My parents hit the pow-pow last week in CO, my timing is perpetually off.
We'll be at M'nut for the MLK weekend. Hoping that they'll be able to get rid of the ice that Abe found. I'm looking forward to taking my daughter down ParaDice. It was never open last year when she got good enough for black runs. I think she'll like it better than DJ. Luckily I know from last winter that she can handle really cold temps. Same for her friend that will be skiing with us.
Snowbird will not freeze thaw this time of year.
especially all the steep north facing.
traveling all that way to ski hills that arent any better than vermont is kinda of pointless to me.
The conditions were okay on Sat at TLine. In fact, the "kids" had a blast during the Rail Jam competition.
See 60 photos (actions shots of the series one):
www.akaflash.com/coverage/rail-jam-01-2009/photosSunday was highly questionable.
Monday was incredibly good and today is bound to be even better.
The sun is coming out!
Last 3 days have brought more than 7 new inches of snow on the summit... meanwhile the guns have been going like crazy (both at Tline and Canaan).
Many events scheduled for Sat and Sun at TLine and Canaan... so take Friday OFF to beat the crowd!
I'm thinking MLK weekend will be pretty nice at Massanutten. They'll be able to blow TONS of snow this week with all the cold temps we're looking at...

Canaan was blowing snow?? Are you serious?? Is the world about to end??

I'll be at M'nut for MLK. Hoping to get my daughter's friend up to the top. But with the cold weather, I bet the slopes will be fairly empty early and late. We'll take long lunches.
It looks like I am leaving tomorrow eve for the mtns. I'll be skiing Tline on Thursday and then working from Fri-Tues. Anyone going to be up that way? I'd like to make a few turns with some folks (especially on Thurs since I will have the whole day to ski).
Good luck up there fri...5 to 10 below lows & a high of..0!
..not to mention windchill..So cold that the snow will cut off because of it being too cold for flakes to form up high where flakes are born...I'm skiing georgia next weekend!

The only good thing I suppose is that they usually cancel the children's program when it is that cold. That means I may have a free day to ski (on the clock that is)...
Depending on how much snow the Valley gets, I may be at Tline on Friday am. I'm hoping the next clipper will bring a substantial dump.
It's looking like Timberline is going to be sweet tomorrow... 2-4" tonight, 3-5" tomorrow. I think I feel a stomach bug coming on
Be careful Abe, it is going around. They are saying that the only way to get rid of it is to take a day off from work and do something you enjoy.... I'll see you there??
It's Cabin Mountain fever, i think it is very contagious in fact there are documented cases of it being passed on teh internets......ooooh i'm feeling like a piece of crap i think i may need some time off
As much as I'd love to I'll probably wuss out and not make it over to Timberline tomorrow.
I suppose I'll get my fill of skiing this weekend up at Killington

You going to exercise disease prevention tomorrow?? I'll be there warding off any bugs that I am starting to catch. It's a shame there isn't more at Whitegrass cuz I would definitely like to go there.... Maybe I can find a tele instructor at Tline tomorrow that wants to give a level 1.....

Watch it David...you have not even darkened the door of medical school yet. You are not licensed to provide a remedy for Abe's malady...er...obsession!
The Colonel
oh ye of little faith. I guess I'll have to post some pics to prove that I was there...
