Found this site very informative but would like your opinion of the best place to ski during my visit. This will be a day trip of skiing so I want to keep the driving to a min. I've been skiing since I was a child so experience is not a problem but my wife and mother-in-law will be taking lessons. Thanks in advance for your options.

Whitetail or Liberty for close-in skiing--under two hours. 7 Springs or Wisp if you are willing to drive 3.5 hours. Snowshoe for an overnight.

An out-of-the-box idea: Bryce. Small vertical (500') but close (1.5 hours or less from VA burbs) and relatively uncrowded at the holidays. Presumably less accomplished skiers wouldn't worry about the vertical, and ski school there is quite good.
