The Pennsylvania resort is auctioning off retired Blitzen chairs from September 25-27, 2026, giving longtime Seven Springs skiers a chance to bring home a substantial piece of the mountain’s history. The Blitzen lift has carried skiers and snowboarders since 1975.
The online auction opened at noon on Friday, September 25 and will close at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 27. Each chair is being auctioned separately, with a minimum starting bid of $250. Photos of the individual chairs are available on the auction web site.
Buyers should probably measure their garage first.
Each retired chair is approximately 97 inches tall and 67.75 inches wide and weighs around 200 pounds. The chairs include their neck/bail assemblies but do not include the original grip attachment. They are being sold as-is and may show the scratches, fading, weathering, and rust accumulated over decades of service.
Winning bidders will also need a plan for getting their purchase home. Seven Springs will not ship or deliver the chairs. Pickup will take place at the resort’s Avalanche Parking Lot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4. The resort recommends bringing an appropriate vehicle and additional help for loading.
Proceeds will benefit three local first-responder organizations: the Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department, New Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, and Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department.
Out With the Triple, In With the Quad
The auction comes as Seven Springs completes one of the largest lift projects underway at a Mid-Atlantic ski area this summer.
As DCSki reported in August, the old Blitzen triple is being replaced by a new Doppelmayr fixed-grip quad. The new lift will increase uphill capacity by approximately 33 percent, carrying about 600 more passengers per hour.
Seven Springs is also relocating the top terminal approximately 400 feet downhill. The change is intended to reduce congestion around the old unloading area while providing more efficient access toward Lost Boy and the North Face side of the mountain. Vail Resorts says the new lift should also improve reliability.
Seven Springs chose a fixed-grip quad after considering skier traffic, terrain, and local weather conditions. Resort officials noted that fixed-grip lifts can operate more reliably during icing events than detachable lifts. The project is expected to be ready for the 2026-2027 ski season, pending final approvals.
The Blitzen project is part of a larger package of offseason improvements at Seven Springs that includes approximately 3,000 feet of replacement snowmaking pipe, a new PistenBully 400 Park Pro snowcat, and a new haul rope and grips for the Cortina chair.
Another Mid-Atlantic Chair Finds a New Home
Seven Springs isn’t the first Vail-owned Mid-Atlantic resort to discover that old chairlifts can have some value after their final ride.
In 2024, Whitetail Resort auctioned 30 chairs and 17 trail signs as it prepared to remove the little-used Jib Junction double chair. That auction benefited the EpicPromise Employee Foundation.
For Seven Springs regulars, the Blitzen auction offers something different: a chair that spent more than half a century carrying skiers around one of Pennsylvania’s largest ski resorts.
Finding a place to put a 200-pound chairlift chair may require some creativity. But for a Seven Springs skier with enough space — and a sufficiently understanding spouse — it would be difficult to find a more authentic piece of ski-room furniture.
