Skied Platty today for the first time and had a great time. Total opposite of yesterday's crowd scene elsewhere in the Catskills. Plattekill reminds me of White Grass and Blue Knob.

Ok, I gotta give them a try now.

Note that it’s only open on weekends and holidays, although you can reserve and rent it on a weekday.  I didn’t bother to look up the price.  At some time in the past IIRC they would open on a weekday if there was X” of new powder.  I can’t find anything about that now.

Im kicking myself not to have gone there when I lived in the east.  The woods skiing is supposed to be very good.

Plattekill is definitely in the same category as Blue Knob in terms of fun terrain, both trails and off-piste.  But it's much better run.  It's open Fri, Sat, Sun 8:45 to 4:15.

What I liked was being able to ski the full 1000 ft vertical in one shot, with only a short run out at the bottom.  There is more than one trail like that.  One is almost never groomed so bumps up.  Another has one side groomed.

One reason the trees are so nice is that there is a volunteer clearing work day every fall.

By far my favorite Catskill Mountain.  The mountain is owned by a former ski instructor so it is definitely a skiers mountain.  If you go stay in Roxbury which is close.  The Roxbury Inn is very cool and funky and there is a nice little restaurant nearby.

NY Times article about Plattekill on Jan. 4, 2019.  The focus is on the fact that the entire mountain can be rented for a day for $4,500.  I heard that last season that happened 8 times.  It's popular enough that the price has gone from $2500 in 2008 to $4500 for 2019.

For anyone interested in telemark skiing, The Plattekill Telefest will be March 1-3, 2019.  Apparently Camelback has a major dealer of telemark gear and does a Telefest in late Feb.

In addition to Platty's dedication to snow making, that portion of southeast New York tends to get a fair amount of snow. It's not uncommon for southeast New York to have the closest ski areas to the mid-atlantic that get dumped on when a storm passes through the northeast. It might be a quirk of just the last few winters but as I've been somewhat obsessively following the weather models the last 2 or 3 years that area has even been the sweet spot for major snowstorms several times.

I've chased storms to Windham before but I've never skied Platty. I'd love to check it out (especially on a Friday with fresh snow). And how amazing would it be to rent out the whole place on a powder day?

This video about Plattekill by the Alba family was made in 2014.  Not much has changed except that there are more glades because of the voluntee work day every fall.

Find out why Plattekill's community is known for “Keepin’ it Real”
