VA getting buried on March 6
March 7, 2013
Massanutten and Wintergreen are happily buried in snow today, March 6. Mnut reported 18 inches as of 10:30am on their snow conditions webpage. They are NOT grooming the black and blue trails. Wintergreen apparently started getting lighter snow after the first few inches. Their snow blog has a pic of 13 inches as of 7am. A SkiSE regular spent the night up there. He's having a good time today!
Going to be a stellar spring skiing weekend!
Thanks for the timely report! VA is for snow sports lovers!

I made a mistake and went to Whitetail today mostly because the drive would be shorter and easier, should have headed to Massanutten. Whitetail was good but it quit snowing about noon, they reported 6 inches at 0600. I'd guess they got closer to 8-10 inches of thick wet snow by the time it quitters and a lot of people headed up there for a weekday for the same reason as me, no work and fresh snow, however that meant it got chopped up and packed down quickly. Looks like i made the wrong call, should have stayed in VA, sounds like Massanutten got absolutely dumped on.
Having watched weather at Mnut for 8 years, I've got a pretty good feel for what's possible. I skied there right after/during the blizzards of 2009-10. :-)
Mnut snow webpage said 22-24 inches as of 3pm. It hadn't stopped snowing quite yet. It's still going to fun this weekend when I get there!
Have seen pics at Wintergreen from today. Drifts up to 4 feet. But they lost power around 11:30am for several hours. So the Highlands are mostly untracked. That's the place to go on Thu if you have 4WD. Troopers were watching the road to keep out 2WD vehicles.
I can't make it to Mnut until Sat. Conditions are going to be way better than I expected when I planned a final ski weekend a week ago!
Wintergreen's snow blog says they got 24-30 inches. With all the wind, they can't figure out how to measure. Access road is open.
Massanutten says 22-24 inches. They groomed out everything except MAKattack. Can see on the webcams that local families are taking advantage of the fact that local schools are closed again today. Mnut has a special rate for snow days. The slopes are much busier than the average late season Thursday.
Very happy temps will stay cool until the weekend. Should be perfect spring skiing this weekend when it gets up into the 50's.
