With all the talk about first snow in the air, what's your prediction for the first lift-serviced skiing in the Mid-Atlantic (defined as alpine PA-MD-WV-VA-NC areas profiled by DCSki)?
Which area? Which date?
I have to admit that I haven't followed first openings all that much. Instead, I just hope to get started as soon after Thanksgiving as possible. But for this year I'll predict that Wisp and Camelback will both open on Saturday, November 21.

I seem to think that Cataloochee was firsties the last couple of years, but they are not profiled by dcski. Therefore, before anyone pulls a Mr Segal, I'm gonna say Sugar Mtn will have an open white ribbon of death on November 14th.
I am with you on Sugar. They have the elevation and it is a matter of pride for them.
I do agree with the North Carolina predictions based on the past couple years. Deep down of course I hope that Timberline has a complete change of philosophy and beats em to the punch. More realistically, id be happy to get a run or two in over thanksgiving up here at 7Springs or HV.
I don't think Sugar or any of the NC areas just yet....still too warm and then there's the sun angle. Then again, I know Gunther...
no, they are probably more than a month away from regular service, and probably a few weeks away from an early, irregular opening. but it will happen and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel my friends. geek out, all.
Cataloochee, definitely... think within 2 weeks
If we're talking about a place that opens and stays open. I say 7 Springs on Nov 27th

Well...the weather is here and we know you're all beautiful and we hope to see each of you on Monday! You heard it right, we began making snow for the 2009/2010 snowsports season on Sunday, October 18 at 6:45am and with a weather forecast for lows in the 20's for tonight, Cataloochee plans on making snow as long as temperatures permit on Beginners Easy Way and Beginners Rabbit Hill and plans to kick off the 2009/2010 season at 1pm on Monday, October 19.
ps: yeah I know it's a little south, but just go with it, ok.
