After so much hope & anticipation, March is turning into a big BUMMER mad..I can only justify the injustice by seeing that mother nature seems to be trying to build back the Arctic ice....There has been a lot of cold way up north that has not had a means of transport south to us...maybe Mamma Nature is saying...Hold off you greedy buggers...I gave you a good winter..do you want one next year?

Ck out the sea Ice graph linked to the above post....Could we be heading for a showdown with the 30 year ave??...remember that all this ski talk would be null & void if that sea ice goes By By like some folks would have you believe is going to happen....Stay Tuned!

Nice -- thanks for the graph.

What (if any) significance do you see in the fact that we are diverging on the 30 year average mostly b/c levels are remaining higher through March and April in 09 than they did in 07 or during the 30 year average? In other words, 09 more closely resembled 07 (and thus was further below average) during January and February as compared to March and April. Any significance to that?

+1st of all, lets not count on the Divergence as you call it Leo before it happens...We could see a dramatic drop all of a sudden due to whatever reason Mama nature feels like throwing our way..08 & 09 so far has been running at or about the 6th to 7th lowest level since records have been taken...That figure could be tweeked a little..I'm kinda guessing at this point, but I do know that it is higher than 05 & much higher than 07 which were 2 record low ice years.....
There are too many variables Leo to figure anything concrete at this point..It just seems that Mamma Nature has preserved some cold up there by "Sacrificing" it elsewhere which is allowing the Ice to get the break that hopefully will halt the downward spiral to an ice free Arctic which would mean bye bye to mid atlantic Skiing .

Refreshed this thread....Yeah Murphy..Looks like the heavier stuff is down SS & further south way & spilling over the Mtn's & over to you..Canaans getting a little but I bet the top of MPC has a couple of inches on it...it always looks darker on the DS Cam over to the right of the screen where MPC is...but then again that happens all winter long cool...April Snow showers bring a heat wave to the Mid Atlantic?

Yeh..You could see that Squall moving in over an hour ago on Radar..Theres another one behind it....Just talked to a friend in Davis that says it will snow hard for awhile & he would pick up .5 to an inch then it would all melt by the next squall which would start the process all over again..been doing that all day he says....Its been below freezing all day above 4200'...Bet Snowshoe & places like MPC are a winter wunderland!

The 8 inches up at MPC packs very well..Thankyou for asking grin....Will have to save some snowcones for the coming warm spell.
Was it last year or the year before that the Sods & even my place at 3000' just south of the valley got 4 inches the week before Memorial Weekend?

I believe its over Folks...The old mans last gasp. Nice little frosting on the Alpps..Not the 35 inches that fell on WV sometime in the past this time period but a nice way to say goodbye to winter & have hope for future winters....speaking of future Winters..This will be big news & you heard it here 1st Folks...Look at that Graph!..What an amazing comeback for the Arctic ice...I cannot believe that the earth has acomplished this feat without a massive Gov't/Taxpayer funded Stimulus Pkg Encouraged by a certain Nobel peace prize Honorie & folks that like to climb up in trees for a living....

My firsthand report says it was HOT in the the mountains this weekend!! Made it to atleast 85 on Saturday.

Only brought 3 or 4 trout to hand, but we sure did find a lot of ramps. I've got the breath to prove it!! Dinner on Saturday night around the fire was Da Bomb! I almost don't miss ski season.....almost wink

Looking at the High Res image on the DS Cam, it looks likes these temps have done a number on the snow at Tline. Just a few patches on Lightning and some snow left on the bumps of Lower Dew Drop..

Who could ever predict what Forces would make the Arctic Ice go from one extreme to another...just when you think we are back on track it nosedives like Mama Nature is asleep at the wheel & then she wakes up & says..Whoa!!.. & throws in that last curveball.....like watching a soap opera....

I wouldn't take that April and early May data too seriously Andy. They had a satellite going awry and shut their observations down for a month because nothing they were getting made sense. Everything from January to June 1 could be jacked.

Yeh..They are working on a new sat now. It seemed that the data that was flawed was showing a lot less ice than there was..there actually was a cool period that slowed the ice melt for awhile.
I've logged in as favs a number of weather sites that are ringed around the Arctic & all seem to show normal readings..Barrow,AK was cold up to late may then they had a heat wave for the 1st part of june but then went back below norm for the last half of the month....
Maybe this Cap & trade thing Obama wants where we have to spend beaucoup (Excuse my french) bucks insulating & painting everything a refletive White will get our winters back on track cool....Painting our roofs & lawns white was actually my Idea..Its on one of my posts somewhere....BUT I WAS JOKING!!

The one good thing that could come out of the Cappy thing would be that without Coal mining a Ski area on MPC might be more important since the out of work folks would need jobs...

Those would be white jobs, not green. Wonder where alanM was while they were trading caps in the House?

Look at it this way too, Cap and Trade forces the EPA into a zoning regulation like area that before you are *allowed* to sell your house/property, it has to meet 'green standards'. So I guess the older homes in CV, the home owners are screwed. Hrm, I guess home values will drop like a rock.

Just wait till the cost of energy goes up 90% (Per Heritage Foundation's numbers & CBO's) and then we literally do have to pay for every run we make. How about buying a ticket for one ride up the chair lift and then a fee for getting to the bottom for super exhaling all of that carbon dioxide since that makes us a polluter.

What a world to look forward too...

And this has a bit more detail. Looks like we're very close to 2005:

I'm soooooo hoping for a good, cold, snowy winter! I know odds are against me, but I can't move back to New England, so I've gotta keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for posting that bottom Graph Scooter...I'm thinking the ice will beat out 08 & just might beat 05..if it caught up to 06 that would be great. It would be enough for me to relax a little thinking that we have bottomed out in 07 & the ice is coming back!...Lets get back to winters like 95/96 (BIG SNOWS) & 76/77 where the chesapeake froze over!!

I remember one winter around 91 or 92 when we had to have the Coast Guard break up the ice in the Potomac to get fuel barges up to the terminal. We had to make sure the CG ship would fit under the 14th St bridge.

The Sea Ice looks to have bottomed out on the 13th Because it has come back today with a 50,000 Sq K rebound! If yest was the bottom then we Beat out 07,08 & came within 65,000 Sq K of 05...when your talkin Ice in the 5+Mill Sq K Then we came dang close to 05! This Min extent has come right on time, so there should be ample cold for Killington to be Firing up the snowguns before Sept is over for the big Photo Op...Just say NO to GW!...

Iv'e been Suspicious of the NSID folks as to being a GW Biased org & now I'm almost certain of it....After numerous clues, the latest is that even though there has been a steady increase in ice since the 12th of Sept.. they will always come up with lame excuses as to why that is happining...even their graph shows a leveling out scenerio which is not the case..The Ice is coming back Strong & will overcome 05 very soon...Keep your Fingers Xed Winter Lovers!
