roundtop? liberty?
December 17, 2008
is roundtop worth going to? My friend has a roundtop/lib/whitetail pass. last season we hit up whitetail a few times, liberty once (the snow was horrible). Would you recommend roundtop, and for that matter, trying liberty again?
All we really care about is getting some decent terrain.
Nonstop, you and your friend can find decent terrain at both Roundtop and Liberty IMHO.
Liberty has a nice bunch of short steeps on the backside (skier's right), plus White Lightning on the front. Upper Gunbarrel at Roundtop is one of the steeper runs in PA. Not being a mogul skier, I haven't tackled it yet. While both areas fall short of Whitetail's vertical drop, both will provide some variety in your skiing.

Liberty has some nice runs. They tend to be a bit narrower than Whitetail so can get more crowded. The real secret to shorter lines (especially on weekends) is to get to the backside as quickly as possible and stay there. Lines are generally shorter and move more quickly. Besides, that's where the steeper terrain earlier mentioned is located. Upper Ultra on skier's right has some nice stashes of snow and is currently open. The patrol tends to mark the edge rather conservatively, but that just means stuff on the other side is less skied off! You do have to be careful, however, as it may be thin at times. Same on Upper Heavenly where if you stick to skier's right, you'll find some nice snow as well. Like anything around here, mileage is only accumulated with a lot of chair lift rides.
