The first Ski journal of the new season arrived: POWDER. Winter is just around the corner.

Sorry to hear that Brad. I have a sore throat--must be this darn rain. If its not snow, it does not make me feel good.

The mag has a slightly new layout and format than last year, but from what I read this morning, so far so good.

Powder tries to appeal more to the "skier" as opposed to someone interested in what Ski calls, "the ski lifestyle."

This translates into more ski related content and fewer restaurant reviews, real estate pieces, trophy home profiles, etc. It also means more pictures and less text--something I don't always appreciate.

Ski and Skiing (same company) definitely have better writers, but Powder tries harder and feels less commercial.

Bottom line: I subscribe to all three magazines. I used to get Ski Canada as well, and am sorry I dropped it but the extra cost of postage translated into an expensive subscription for what I was getting.

Powder Magazine does tend to over-hype it's street-cred, dirtbag skier image. Sometimes it seems more like a marketing ploy than anything else.

Get Ski Press/Ski Presse while you're at it. Spend your money on sports- they're free, eh?

The eastern ski reviews are based on testing at Mont Sainte Anne, so quite a bit more relevant than 'nationwide' tests done at Mt. Hood, say.

Polish up your french- the four editions (US, CA, QC, EU) have different content at that.

Another great ski magazine is Ski Canada. Good writing, fewer ads and much more objective equipment reviews.

My first issue came in a brown wrapper which elicited a narrow-eyed stare from my wife
