I had forgotten.
Have been in the valley the past two weekends and the maple leaves are beginning to change color already. The nights have been cool and they have had tons of precipitation this summer.

I always understood that was a sunscreen effect.
As in: there's too much sunlight for the ambient temperatures, it's breaking down cells instead of pushing sugar making - lets protect the leaves by pushing anthocyanins until we can recover the nitrogen in the proteins and put it in the roots. IOW, in high sunshine conditions it doesn't take very much coolness to trigger the mechanism.
I can say that here in the Lost River / Wardensville area, we've had days where the daytime high has barely touched 70 a few days last week with nights dipping into the high 40s! It's like we went from July to October!
