This Weekend!
Lot's of Epic and DCSki posters have been showing up to Snowy Luau for years now. It's the Mid Atlantic's premiere ski area beach party. Timberline is the home area of many of us Bears/DCSkiers, so we can show you around and get you into trouble on or off the slopes. Or out of trouble if needed.
(If you ever get into trouble, just say you are a friend of Jimmy.)
This year, it's the magic collision of Hawaiian Beach Party/Pig Roast, Saint Patty's Day, and ton's of snow on the slopes.
Per Timberline's Web Site:
March 16-17
Snowy Luau Festival Events
March 16:
Lahaina Triathalon

(If you ever get into trouble, just say you are a friend of Jimmy.)
HaHa that's too funny dropping my name to get out of trouble if you get in trouble it may be because you ARE a friend of jimmy.

Meeting Place: Ski school meeting area (on uphill side of the orange temp fence, away from the lift a bit to not cause lift-line congestion.) This spot is adjacent to the base of the Silver Queen lift (far looker's left lift that goes up White Lightning) and is a convenient walk out from the lodge.
Edit: if they happen to set up more than one temp fence (occasionally happens on a busier weekend), meet at the uphill temp fence, the one closest to the lift loading area.
Meeting Times:
Fri: 1:30 PM
Sat, Sun: 9 AM, 10 AM, 1:30 PM
Open to any proposed changes.
Been a LONG while since I've last posted. In fact, pretty much spent this past spring and summer recovering from ACL surgery in the left knee. However, I have been out skiing this year, but not as much as I've liked.
Anyway, the cool thing is that there is a bunch of us that is renting a house up there at Timberline for the weekend, so, for the first time in a few years, I WILL ACTUALLY BE THERE!! It will actually be cool to hook up with some of my old DC Ski buddies again.
I do plan on taking the day of work off on Friday and heading up there, so depending on when I can get there will determine if I can sneak any runs in. I will have to look for you guys on Saturday and Sunday, at the very least (I guess I'll need to find a red ribbon)
With the recent warm-up with rain then subsequent re-freeze, the trees at T-Line have about 12 inches of bomber base. (Much less base than on Sunday, but no mank.) With the projected snow Wed to Fri AM, the worst case scenario is equivalent to Friday March 1st when I skied with LaurelHillCrazie and wgo. That was not a bad day in the trees at all. Best case is a lot lot better.
At any rate, there will be opportunity to hit every tree run from boundary to boundary (which hasn't been the case the past two Snowy Luaus.) So bring your off-piste Mad River skis if you're up for that.
Trails will obviously have a lot more cover than the trees. More than normal for this time of year.
No sun for ya JL...Further info as I see fit...
Watch for Jim K on Friday afternoon.
The Colonel
I will be there as usual.
I will be there Friday afternoon
I will be there Friday afternoon
I don't have red tape but I may have some yellow caution tape on somehow. Likely skiing with Jimmy if you know him. But I'll be looking for folks at the 1:30 meetup.
Likely skiing with Jimmy, I may have some yellow caution tape on.
Might be a new trend!!!
yellow caution tape for JohnL seems obvious after the fact.
If you have ever skiied with JohnL or Jimmy in the trees you'd understand the appropratness of the yellow caution tape...
Not really wanting to make the trip to play in the rain. I love all of you guys, but not that much. Guess I'll be a game time decision.
Andy, you have any good news or are you still hiding?
Weather channel says 70% chance of rain in Davis.
NOAA says 90% of Rain/Snow.
Which one will it be??
I'm a whiner, I know...

Slushy on top...close but no cigar...
Gone fishin....
still looking pretty!
http://www.fsvisimages.com/images/photos-main/doso1_main.jpgHow can you capture a cam shot without it updating?...how can you post it as a pic instead of a link?..
Wish you could have seen the 745am pic..awesome!...
you never know what kind of cloud and fog shots you will see on the cam...even though mountains dont move I am always amazed at all the different shades and colors..and different looks the clouds and sun can provide...it keeps my view of MPC,Weiss and the roaring plains from my camp just south of the valley always fresh and interesting!
Oh..sorry..hijack...gone fishin...
Heavy dose of rain at 7 am or so at base. 38 right now.
David out for today.
Well if things are the same in Canaan as they were here today then I'm guessing today was a pretty sweet spring skiing day.
Uh, well, more like Drippy Luau today.
If you have ever skiied with JohnL or Jimmy in the trees you'd understand the appropratness of the yellow caution tape...
heh.
Damp Luau showers on Sat but still a lot of fun, good friends, great hero snow, fantastic torch parade, great show and Northern-lights-like fireworks (in cloud).
Today, snowing heavily, really pretty!
Snowy Luau weekend at Timberline, the best in the east!!
Thanks Doc and all the staff, now about those old slow chairs!
The Colonel
PS: if you see JimK, ask him about the Polynesian show??!! Anybody get any pics?!!
How can you capture a cam shot without it updating?...how can you post it as a pic instead of a link?..
I'm pretty sure if you go to the
24 hour sequence you can copy and image location from the time you want (in the past 24 hours) and it should stay put and not update.
Speaking of
24 hour sequence, anyone looked at it recently? Haven't been able to see the Valley for a while.

Almost as bad as SLC.
Really great to ski with multiple DCSkiers; and fantastic to meet Scottyb and catch up with Charlie after several years. For those that did not get to Snowy Luau this year, make sure you plan to attend next year. And the Canaan Valley Resort lodge will be available for first class accommodations following renovations and construction of two new 4 story wings (with indoor hallways).
Speaking of CVR, renovations to the ski area and construction of the relocated tubing hill with its own lodge should be completed this summer. I was told that additional larger snow towers and installation of a "people mover" up cardiac hill from ski lodge to lifts, as well as final touch up/landscaping to tubing lodge should be completed this summer. The new beginners area with moving walkway to side of ski lodge parking lot appears to be a great addition. Tubing park has quite lengthy tubing lanes served by served by separate "people mover" lift. Thirst Quinchers bar looks enjoyable and addition of warming wood fire-pits outside both ski & tubing lodges is a pleasant addition ( need benches by fire pits). Along with the CVR improvements and completion of Corridor H to Davis in 1914/15, CV should be jumping. And my estimate of time to drive from NVA to Davis upon Corridor H reaching Davis should be 2.5 hours, all but 20 miles (rt 55 from I81 to Wardensville) will be on Interstate quality high speed roadways.

...was huntin' in florida, so I missed the events at tline this weekend...but from the pics on the official timberline facebook page---looks like the fireworks and lava parade looked awesome from the lodge...

You were fooled Tucker!!!
Those photos are from 4 years ago - first posted on FB by someone and then merely shared again by Fred. You'll have to look elsewhere for photos - just make sure there's fog in it - think heavy cloud of sulfur and lava flowing over the top.
Welcome back...
...was huntin' in florida,
Manatees?
[quote=Tucker]...was huntin' in florida,
roaches - was my first choice?
That last picture with the guest hula dancer has an "orb" in it, ghost dancer?
