A-Basin & Loveland Both Blowing Snow
October 23, 2010
and with the forecast of highs in the 40's and low 50's and lows in the 20's at 9000 feet every day for the next week (colder where these ski areas reside at above 10,000 feet), I suspect that both will be open by next weekend.
That'd be a week later than last year, but it means that the start of the season is no longer weeks away -- it's days away.
This is the last time I'll respond to this post because I'm just sounding like a buzz killing pessimist but I just don't see them opening this weekend...the freezing level is F-cast to be above 13500' wed into the weekend. I'm thinking that it will be as late as the 20th before they can get very serious.
I'm kinda happy for a late start to winter because it is helping build up the Arctic Icepack in a record rebound which is what we need for the longhaul!

I was in Breckenridge yesterday. The entire 10 mile range was white from the snowfall that happened Friday night. Heck it was snowing at 3 pm Friday afternoon in Breckenridge. It was snowing at noon on Saturday in Georgetown.
As far as the forecasts go, take a look at weather.com for zip 80424 and the 10 day forecast. Only one day in the next 10 is forecast to be above 33 degrees for a low - and that's at 9600 feet. Loveland is at 10,800 base and 11,800 at the top of chair one.
That means that Loveland will be below 30 degrees every night in the next 10, and they'll be blowing snow.
Since you're a non believer, perhaps you should take a look at the A-Basin webcam to see exactly how much snow they've already blown -- and A-Basin is lover that Loveland.

It was too warm and too wet to make snow last night. "We should be able to make snow tonight" said Eric Johnstone, Snowmaking & Trail Maintenance Manager. Mother Nature did help us out with some natural snow. The snow is still coming down hard! Check out the photo of the clock tower (8:49am).

Our snowmakers had a good full weekend of snowmaking here at Loveland Ski Area. Things are coming along and we're hoping to keep the guns blowing all week! Keep checking back for updates!"
imho, they open on Friday or Saturday ...
if it's Friday, I'll be there for a run or two off the new high speed quad.
actually blew this past weekend at sunday river as well
Well....52 degrees at 420pm colorado time at 11000'..sorry dude, no go this weekend. I tried to tell ya..I study weather like I study alcohol content in my beers!
I see you are 60 years old & skiing hard & I really dig that since I am 10 years from that point & it gives me hope!..your mountains will turn on a dime & maybe next weekend you can get those 177 skiis rockin!!
Another No Go this weekend but I Gar-un-tee next weekend...do a few runs for us Bob!
The weather out there has been really awful this year. The weather service keeps forecasting cold weather, and it keeps missing the forecast. I just got my Breckenridge power bill. The average temp this year is 7 degrees higher this year than last year (49 vs 42 degrees). That's why Loveland opened on October 7, 2009, and why it's still not open.
The areas better start praying for cold weather. Keystone and Copper are scheduled to open on November 5, with Breck scheduled to open on the 12th. When things do open, A-Basin will have 600 feet of vert open, Loveland will have 1000, Keystone will have 2300, and Copper will have about 1700.
The good news is that it's snowing now, and all four resorts are blowing snow. The bad news (for me) is that I won't get out there again until about November 21, so there'll be no October skiing for me this year. My shots at it were October 8 or 15, and it just wasn't to be. One of those dates would have worked in a "normal" year, but this hasn't been a normal year.
Loveland's website says they're opening tomorrow at 9:00 with one trail from top to bottom.

Sunday river Maine & Timberline resort Oregon opened this weekend so they had to dig deep to join the Jones's by opening tomorrow....its just braggin rights & it is just 1 run that has a 1000' vert drop...Not top to bottom which would be about 2700' vert....
I think killington,Vermont wins the honors for the 1st real Dump of the year..Go East coast!!!
PS..Bring your Rock skiis...
I sounds like Summit County is getting it''s first "real" winter storm of the season with 5-7 inches already down and another 5-7 inches due by Monday.
A-Basin opens Monday. I sure would have liked to try to be
first chair EVER for the new Black Mountain Express high speed quad. Somebody will get that distinction. Alas, it won't be me.

Loveland's 2700 feet of vert is down the east side of the continetal divide -- double diamond terrain that is NEVER open early season. It requires lots of natural snow for coverage. There's no snow making there.
Loveland always tries to open the chair one's 1000 feet of blue terrain first. It's been that way for over 20 years.
