WTG Improvements
September 5, 2010
I posted a question on Wintergreen's Facebook wall about what improvements they had in store for next year. Here is their reply:
"We've got quite a list for this Winter (just like every year). New rental equipment (including more boards and helmets), learning area improvements including a new conveyor lift, and even 40 new energy-efficient guns to get those critical trails open early."
I read on another site that 10 of those guns were going in the Highlands but nothing official.
nice, thanks for the info. more snowmaking will always be the highest priority. do tehy have infinite water ?
Good question...I will ask around this winter. I always have assumed they use Lake Monacan. I have never heard of them having a water issue affecting snow making.
A conveyor lift will hep with conjestion near the rental shop.
Also as we are talking about WTG. What is the best exit to take from 64 comming from RIC? the one right after CHO or the blue ridge parkway exit at the top of the big hill?
I talked with some front office guys there a few years back and they pump it up the mountain from the Stoney Creek area for sure---not sure where is specifically comes from, but is seems to me it is probably more of a cost factor then supply. Lifting that much water 2,000 or more feet vertically has to cost something. They said water was an issue but not a problem.
On the approach question, I come from the Valley side and think the parkway approach is the best--not sure about the Richmond side. I do not think you make great time either way once you get off 64. Also in really bad weather, I would take the Nellysford route in any event.

it's got to be better taking 29 to 6 to 151. no reason to go up the hill and back down (back down often has ice on we morning)
i always thought that little tube area under the double was a waste, maybe that is where the conveyor goes? get some people off the cross trail i hope.

No need to go to the top of Afton "Mountain" (i.e., Rockfish Gap on I-64) if you're traveling from the east. Go through Nellysford. Also, the Blue Ridge Parkway is often closed by wintry conditions.

From Richmond I take the Crozet exit and head west on 250 to 151. That works well for me. If you go to the Parkway exit you are just going to come right back down on 250 or one of the country roads.
Last year the beginner area was by that old tubing area under the double and it had no lift. Wherever they put it, I wish they would operate the conveyor all day. That way people that are just learning can hang out in that area and be comfortable and not clog up the cross trails so much.
