Ok, so I am out of college and gainfully employed... only problem is that I just graduated with a degree in Meteorology and am currently working Business Development for a defense contractor. To put my degree to use I have decided to take on a late summer/fall project and attempt to create my own website for Mid-Atlantic skiing forecasts!
Here is my plan:
- Try and work towards a website like this one that a fellow PSU ski team/meteo major created in Colorado
-Provide a weekly forecast on Wednesdays that includes a weekend forecast and an outlook for the following week
-Include some low level graphics
-Try to link the forecasts to things like twitter/facebook/ski websites to really keep people up to date
-Have a comment/question page
-Try to get resorts to link to the forecast as well as ski clubs/sites like this one!
Overall, it will probably take a large investment in time to get it running and I don't expect it to be easy. However, I really do need some avenue to use my degree and keep with the science in case I want to go back to meteo and I believe that this would provide me just that opportunity. I also don't expect to make and $$ from it with advertising (want it to be minimal) or whatever but who knows where i could go with it. Hopefully, it will be a good learning experience and resume builder if I do end up going through with the plan.
Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Apparently I have to vote to see my own results.. so subtract 1 "Maybe"
I'd check it, especially if it had point forecasts for Snowshoe, Winterplace and Wintergreen.
You may want to check out Ray's Weather. It covers the NC mountains so I'm not too familiar with it but most people who ski that area seem to trust it.
Road condition forecasts would be good too.

So I talked with Joel Gratz... guy who is doing coloradopowder.com... and he is toying with taking his site national. If so, i would in some way/shape/form become his DC area (PA, MD, VA, WV, NC?) source. Not sure yet what it will entail but sounds fun. My idea with this was, possibly over time, make a deal with resorts to provide forecast summaries for lift passes or something to that extent.
But regardless, and ideas would be great... thanks for the reference Murphy!

Good luck.
I'd definitely check it weekly.
But from a statistics point of view, I have to tell you there is no doubt you are getting a response bias here...people who are checking DC Ski forums in August are definitely more adamant about skiing than your average bear.

Yep.... more the feedback that I'm looking for! Like what do people want from the forecast? How detailed? Ect..
But yeah... us who are buying skis and checking a skiing forum in Mid-Aug don't exactly represent the average DC skier.

I want to have an idea (+/- no more than 1") of the amount of snow expected to fall specifically in Cherry Bowl Glades at Timberline. I'd preferably like the info at least 5-7 days in advance. Oh, and can you get that to me via text message?
