Ski Fest 2009

The Ski Club of Washington, DC, is up and skiing. It is also snowboarding, sailing, playing tennis, partying, and engaging in numerous other activities. The Club held is annual Ski Fest on September 19, this year at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tysons Corner, Virginia. The MC was this year's SCWDC President, Leo Boelhouwer. He amused the crowd of about 200 with his tales of presidential responsibility. Leo says he hopes to build up the club's traditional strength of 2,000 members. Their new motto is "bring a buddy."
Members and friends are welcome to sign up for the trips, but they have to move fast. Some of the trips are already sold out. Fifteen Western and Canadian trips are planned, as well as many to Eastern areas. You can check them out on the club website - www.scwdc.org.

The main sponsor of the Ski Fest was Vail Resorts, which featured a wonderful video of their five resorts - Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Heavenly. Our friend, Jill Canning, the National Sales Manager, sponsored the meeting and gave the presentation, which included information on the special Epic Pass. It is the best way to ski all five Vail resorts. Other sponsors or participants included Snow East Magazine, Capital Hikers, Ed the DJ, Ski Chalet, Willi's, Washington Ski Center, Canaan Valley, Timberline, Ski Liberty, Ski Roundtop, Stowe Mountain Resort, and Whitetail Ski Resort. Representatives were there from the participating ski areas, and trip leaders signed up members to attend their events. Like all institutions, the Ski Club is suffering from the recession, and some club publications have been modified. Ski areas, equipment manufacturers, and snowsports stores are also having a hard time. All involved in the snowsports world are counting on our continued enthusiasm to survive the bumps of this rough season. ...Connie Lawn

Leo sent me this information about SCWDC:

We have 16 Western/International flight trips to ski in locations ranging from Colorado to Italy.

Closer to home, we are running eight ski trips to states in the North East USA, mostly with members driving themselves.

Our club is unique in that we have our own ski and boarding school, with certified instructors.

The last few years our membership has hovered above 2,000 members, but many are into tennis, sailing, hiking, biking, or cultural events, rather than skiing.

We have a ski and boarding fashion show scheduled for Friday, 13 November, 2009. The event is free and all are welcome.

For comprehensive information on all our programs, see our website at SCWDC.org.
