Wisp Dec 9
Weather permitting I'm probably going to lead a family expedition to Wisp on Sunday, Dec 9 for some first turns of the season @ $7. Let me know if anyone else is going to be there, maybe we can take a few runs together? The 10 day forecast has some ups and downs, but looks like enough cold nights for their snowmaking wizards to get good number of trails open by then.

I'm discussing the idea with the family. I'm awaiting skis for my son but we can rent. What kind of terrain will be open? My family is a little jaded because Dad won't fork for lodging so it's got to be good to get them in the car for 6 hour round trip no matter how cheap the lift tickets.

If we get a little consistency with night time lows they should have 60% or more of terrain open including many top to bottom runs. Here are a string of reports from past early-mid December "birthday weekends" and I always had pretty darn good conditions. Of course there are no reports for the years I didn't go due to poor snow

I wish I could remove that comment..Misery loves CO I guess..you all didn't have anything to do with MPC not going f-ward & you all are just trying to have fun....I wish that I could have skied Wisp over t-giving but they couldn't overcome the weather all though I think they fumbled a little. Have a great together folks...no more derogatory comments on "the big little hill" from me....

Jim, thanks for the heads-up on Wisp's 52nd b-day celebration. Will they be selling gasoline at the old prices, too? I'd heard about this event but didn't have it on my radar screen b/c I skied Wisp for my first time only last season.

Sunday is pretty much booked, but I have it on my calendar for Monday! Hope some other DCSki people will be there.

Possible points of meeting are...

1.) Top of Lifts #2, #3 at the Wisp Trail part or the Happy Camper trail.

2.) Mid station or beneath it for runs off of squirrel cage?

3.) Somehow meeting at the base lodge or bottom of the lift never works or is good for Wisp's layout...

Great to see the interest in this. The last couple times we had a successful rendezvous it occurred at the base of The Face trail, which is just a 100ft or so from the upper entrance to the base lodge/cafeteria. That makes it kind of nice to slip into the lodge for a food/rest stop before gathering.

Unless we bump into each other sooner, I suggest we MEET AT THE BASE OF "THE FACE" AT NOON. I'll stand around and wave my poles in a big X until about 12:10, then we can head out for an hour or two. There is no super tough skiing at Wisp so just about everyone from low intermediate should be able to hang with us, no sweat.

They're blowing a bunch of snow all over the mtn right now and the forecast is <32degs for next few days, so I'd guess they'll have both front and backside trails open by the 9th.

BTW, I'm not positive, but the $7 tic on Sunday might be good until 9pm, although I'll probably head home around 4-430.

Now... time for me to dig my snowboarding pants out of storage, get my butt in gear to leave by 9am in the morning and I'm there.

I will have a bright yellow jacket/coat with a hood and tan colored snowboard pants.

Thought I'd bump this as a reminder to any interested parties.
See Ya Sunday!

A little mixed precip is possible Sat night into Sunday, as long as it looks light or sporadic, I'll be there.

Does anyone know if it's supposed to lightly drizzle at wisp tomorrow or if it's supposed to flurry and snow?

As long as they don't call for continuous, hard rain I'm in. A little rain may be good for my group, cut down crowds. Some of my group needs rentals.
BTW, I agree, very impressive that they have Mainstreet, Eyeopener, Ace's Run, Face, Squirrel Cage open, just about all the good stuff.

It's raining in Baker, but I'm heading up regardless. Radar shows nothing currently at wisp. See you all at the bottom of the face at noon.

Uh, oh. Sorry Brad. I didn't get to the Face until about 1206, waited until about 1214. Didn't see anyone, held my poles up in an X. Soggy day, but got in about 5 hrs between showers. Will try to do trip report tomorrow.

Jim - That's ok. I was there from 10 till closing and come 12:15 I realized that I was running late. Friends who had went up a day earlier and stayed the night were there and with it being so foggy I totally misjudged the time. I didn't make it to the bottom of the face till 12:30ish. Did you stay long? I can honestly say I've never spent a boarding day before where it was THAT foggy all day top to bottom. The whole backside was like being in a cloudy and I couldn't go but creeping along for fear I'd go over the edge of the green runs.
