I'm going out there next weekend and I've found several different driving directions on the internet. I'm actually coming from the Columbia area. Mapquest has me going all the way to Western MD (Garret county) and going down 219. Some directions have me going to I-81 and either heading west from Strasburg, Harrisonburg, or Staunton. What is the best way to go from someone who has actually driven it? I don't want to rely on mapqueest with the little country roads I have to travel.

(I have AWD subaru so I'm not worried to much about road conditions unless it's icy.)

Thanks.

Check out the following Q&A page on DCSki:

It's several years old, but has links to some good discussions that could be useful.

Stay on 55 all the way into Elkins is your best bet. I can make it there in about 4 hours from Western Loudoun. So for you city people I guess that is 66->81->55.
