JohnL passed the 1,000 mark for posts. Now I am not alone as a 4 figure poster and a big lister...

JohnL is an excellent skier who I had an opportunity to meet last season at the DCSki Timberline slopeside gathering.

The next DCSki Forum member on tap to hit the 1,000 club is RogerZ. I He has a little over 200 posts to go to hit that mark. Jimmy is only a few posts behind RogerZ with 773 posts. Bawalker is 4th is with 630.

Wow, I didn't realize I was that high up in the list. I could... but would highly doubt that anyone here would like to see 400 Corridor H posts one after another for the next year.

Thanks John. Hope my boss doesn't find out about this milestone.

Who are the longest posters on this forum? I remember JimK and Otto from way, way back when (and of course Scott.) The first few years, there'd only be a post or two a day, things certainly have picked up in recent years.

How about setting up an RSS feed on Corridor H?

Oh man, I'm not sure I can keep up the pace. Once I get back to my crappy assitantship at school I'll be sure to pick things up so I can work at making the milestone.

What are the perks of this Johnfmh? Free lift tickets for a year to the resort of our choice? Beer? Venture funding for Moonshine Mountain? Or a secret handshake? I'm so excited at finding out!

Looking at the registrations, lbotta was the second person to register for the forum after Scott. He registered on 10/18/99 12:00 PM.

JohnL is also a DCSki pioneer. He registered on 01/06/00 12:00 PM.

Roy registered on 01/11/00 12:00 PM.

As for me, I did not register until 07/18/01 12:00 PM--way down on the list.

Breaking a 1000 posts is a dubious milestone--sort of the equivalent of counting vertical skied at Whitetail or the amount of time spent on chairlifts at Timberline in a season, but it's still a benchmark that should be rewarded in some way. Hmm. We'll have to put our thinking caps on for that one.

I currently have 1455 posts. If I can get to 1,500, that will put me at the vertical of the Western Territory.. Heading up to T-line tomorrow despite feeling like I'm coming down with something. Ugh.

I knew I got on early but didn't think I was that early.

Is there anyway to tell how many unique posters there have been on dc ski? It would be interesting to see the number of unique posters in the year 2000 and the year 2005. (yes I'm a numbers nerd)

There's no automatic way that I know of, but I just did some raw database hacking. Assuming all my SQL hacking is correct, here's what I came up with:

There have been 491 unique posters on the DCSki Message Forums:

Code:

mysql> select count(distinct B_PosterId) from w3t_posts;
+----------------------------+
count(distinct B_PosterId)
+----------------------------+
491
+----------------------------+

During 2000, there were 50 unique posters:

Code:

mysql> select count(distinct B_PosterId) from w3t_posts where (B_Posted >= 946702800) and (B_Posted <= 978238800);
+----------------------------+
count(distinct B_PosterId)
+----------------------------+
50
+----------------------------+
1 row in set (0.29 sec)

During 2005 (so far), there have been 491 unique posters:

Code:

mysql> select count(distinct B_PosterId) from w3t_posts where (B_Posted >= 1104555600) and (B_Posted <= 1136005200);
+----------------------------+
count(distinct B_PosterId)
+----------------------------+
290
+----------------------------+
1 row in set (0.73 sec)

There are many lurkers who have never posted. Although I don't have an easy way to calculate the number of unique visitors to the forums (who are not registered users), between December 3-18, 2005, 11,697 unique I.P. addresses have visited the DCSki site. (That generally sets a lower limit for the number of unique people reading the site; but in some cases, a single I.P. address might represent multiple users. For example, AOL users go through proxies and many AOL users might appear as the same I.P. address.)

I think to just look at the number of unique regeistered users is interesting enough. If we could figure out everybody who just lurked on the internet that might be scary (although Bush and the Patriot Act can do that huh?)

That's almost 1000% growth. I hope in some way this site has been good for Scott (monetarily or emotionally). This site has meant a lot to me over the last 5 years.

I agree. I've been using this site on and off for about two years now (and only registered last year). It has been a tremendous help and appreciate the candid feedback on all ski areas and related items. Not just Mid-Atlantic, but all over. Even in Denver, I have found this site to be most useful.

I just joined last year and visit the site daily. Before then i had visited the site on and off for about a year. I really want to thank scott for all the work he does for this site. It is a vital resource for any skier in the DC area and beyond.

Merry Christmas!!!!!

RogerZ & bawalker, u better check your contrackts. Man, since i hit post #500, i've had the use of a dcski xterra with winter tires, proform pricing, drunken groupies and a ski house with a hot tub. I can't imagine what we'll get when we hit post #1000!

No worries JohnL i think your boss already knows it's all about the skiing. All you dcski pioneers thankyou for your trail blazing. All you lurkers out there, we've been there, come on in from the cold tell us who u are and why you're here! johnfmh, it's all about the fun, keeping it alive, especially during the unseason!

I don't do a lot of writing, but I sure love to come here and read often!!! I really enjoy the posts, especially all the things there are to learn about skiing in the mid-Atlantic. For example, I tried Blue Knob for the first time last year after reading about here extensively. We have decided to make BK an annual family outing every year. Last year stayed at a B&B in Bedford - OraLee's Golden Eagle. My wife and I loved it!

I couldn't survive without my daily DCSki.com fix. I come here pretty much daily from October to March

I joined here 11/2000. Didn't realize I was an old-timer even though I don't post much.

See you on the lifts

We got a bit of a competition shaping up here between Jimmy and RogerZ:

Roger Z User 798 01/16/04 12:00 PM
jimmy User 779 03/05/04 12:00 PM

The question: who will be the next forum member to break 1,000? Maybe we need to set up a pool?

Below I copied part of an early email exchange with Scott. Even back then he was answering his email and doing database updates in the middle of the night.

Thanks for DCSki Scott.
Best Wishes in 2006,
JimK
