Anyone in the Charlottesville area planning on seeing the Warren Miller movie Nov 10?
where is it going to be at
It will also be showing at the Ski and Snowboard Expo November 11, 12 and 13th at the Dulles Expo Center in Fairfax.
Hmmmm....this could be a do. I haven't been to a real showing in a number of years and with the expo I could begin my search for new boots as well.
Also at the expo if you see the movie you receive a free lift ticket to whitetail/liberty/roundtop
Who's going to try to get there on Friday?
Re: the charlottesville showing, it's on thursday Nov 10 at 7 pm at the jefferson theatre on the downtown mall
I'm on the fence between Friday and Saturday. Friday will be less crowded, but Saturday may have more exhibitors. Thoughts?
Tim and I will be going on Saturday. I also hope to find a good deal on a new shell.
I'm really of two minds on this. Over at EpicSki there is a thread [
http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=31352 ] discussing the demise of the Warren Miller movies after the franchise was sold to Time Warner about 3 years ago.
We were very disappointed by last year's installment and were hoping it was an aberration; according to EpicSki, this year's is not even that good. Problem is our tradition has always been to see the new WM movie as the opening event to the ski season, but the Expo keeps getting smaller, shabbier, and less fun each year. I don't know if I can convince my SI, that the $10x2 just for the movie is worth the drive and hassle.
I am open to other opinions. Help?
i just go for the free lift tix. i will be there at noon friday, and probably a few more times over the weekend when i can fit it in. hey, i am cheap.
Hey Chad ...
Where are the free tix usually for? Any of the better local hills or what?
snowcone, they're for the local Snowtime resorts (WT, SL, RT). Only trick is, you've gotta use 'em by Xmas. Should actually happen this year, I think.
I'm thinking Friday will be best. Less hassle, more vendor selection (IIRC there are only about 2 gear vendors there in addition to the swap). When admission to the swap was free, it used to pay to be there during the weekend, but now not so much. Plus it means I can enjoy the last of the sunshine outdoors on the weekend.

I really like the sound of that .
Wow, I finally looked at the thread over at epicski. Pretty unfavorable review, to say the least. I think the bit about them just using his taped narration from previous films is especially sad. I had heard that last year's film was going to be the last one that he was involved with, now we know how this year's film got around that.
I thought it sucked
it just simply is no more the warren miller flics of old. i know the guys very old but slipping in a voice over of warren 3 or 4 times during the movie just is not the same. The skiing segments were IMOA not very good either. They try and get these sureal, close fish eye lense shots and i just want to see some good skiing. Ussually a good ski flic or kayaking flic ends and i think, man its over already? not here though i can honestly say i was thinking , when is this going to end(or get better)? TWO THUMBS DOWN
I didn't like the movie either. It was even worse than last years film. The voice over of WM was very badly done. The fact that it was recut from other previously recorded tapes was clear and very obvious. The begining of the film was pretty good, but after that things started to fall appart and there were a number of really weird segmentes with people sitting arround playing card or whatever. Some of the stuff was funny, but over all it did not have enough sking in the movie. There was way too much junk and more blatany product placement than usual.
Personally, I liked Powpow's video up at CV from a few weeks ago. Great soundtrack too!
I liked POWPOW's video as well as Denis's video. Those were both what it's all about!

I have to give it a thumbs down as well. Missed the beginning but saw most of it. I agree with what everyone else has said. One thing I noticed was the generally poor ski conditions (for a ski film). I want to see skiiers in powder up to their eyebrows. This movie really didn't have much of that. Too bad, looks like the end of an era with the Warren Miller franchise.
