there's a REMOTE chance I will be in CA later this summer, will it be open the rest of the summer or is this just freak the last gasp.

According to their website the 4th is the final day. There is still plenty of snow but they'd be hemorrhaging money if they stayed open. In the last record snow year they stayed open into Aug. but the days when ski areas would do that just for bragging rights are over. There is always Tioga pass, just pack your skins, crampons, and ice axe.
