In early April, Whitetail Resort and its parent company Snow Time, Inc. announced the purchase of the Whitetail Golf Resort. Located a short drive from the ski resort, the Whitetail Golf Resort originally opened in 2000 and has been operated by the Hummelstown General Authority since then. The course will now be operated directly by Whitetail Resort.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of adding the Golf Course to our operation at Whitetail which at this time includes skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and a fly fishing school,” said Whitetail’s President Don MacAskill in a news release. “The acquisition of the golf course allows us to move in the direction of becoming a four season destination, and this purchase will greatly benefit visitors to our region.”

Whitetail has operated the Dusty Wissmath Fly Fishing School since 1997. In the late 90’s, Whitetail also offered mountain biking during the summer months, but discontinued the program several years ago.

The 18-hole Whitetail Golf Course was designed by Rick Robbins and has been described by Golf Magazine as “breathtaking, five stars, a must play.” The facility includes a full service snack bar, rentals, and lessons. The regular rate for an 18-hole game is $35 with cart on weekdays and $49 with cart on weekends and holidays. Discounts are available for seniors and after 1 p.m. Season passes are also available.

Prices are right too.

However, just curious? Didn't they own it before, and spin it out? maybe I am confused.

The golf course has never been completely owned by Snow Time or Whitetail Resort. The course was originally developed through a partnership between Whitetail (prior to Whitetail's sale to Snow Time) and the Dauphin County General Authority (DCGA). Under the original terms of the deal, DCGA owned and financed the golf course and conference facilities, and Whitetail retained ownership of residential development and served to manage the property. Plans for the course were first announced in late 1997, and the course was completed in 2000.

If you do a search for "Whitetail Tees Off" in DCSki's Search Engine, you'll find a story we ran in 1997 announcing the golf course development.

Now, the golf course will be completely owned and operated by Whitetail/Snow Time.

of course without snow...

Are they essentially thinking -- hmm, build ski condos/townhomes around whitetail the SKI area, AND (now) the Whitetail GOLF course?

The golf course is located on Blairs Valley Road (same road as Whitetail), but past the resort (if you are heading to the resort from the I-70/Clear Spring exit).

There were always plans to build homes around the golf course. A local Mercersburg builder was trying to buy the course before SnowTime bought it so that he could do the building. But that fell through. As far as I know, the original owners of Whitetail still own the real estate operation.
