Firsthand Account: Wintergreen Resort
By Ace, a DCSki Reader

Wintergreen received an inch of new snow Sunday morning. All lifts and trails were open (but see below). Temperature was about 33 degrees, warmer and less wind than on Saturday. Slopes had great coverage and base. Surface was loose granular on a hardpack base. Typically there were about 20 folks in all the lines for a lift when you arrived.

It must have been a trying day at Wintergreen operations Sunday. Around 1 p.m. the Highlands lift was closed due to technical problems, which meant the loss of 6 expert trails. Repairs were due to get the lift back in operation Tuesday, but call to verify. To compensate those who waited for the lift (running at one third speed), the group sales office was giving out vouchers for a future lift ticket. Group sales was also besieged by those desiring to get their season pass photo. The process appeared to take no more than 4-5 minutes, but there was a long line in a small office area. If you asked, you could get a complimentary lift ticket to go ahead and get on the slopes while you waited for the line to process.

Monday everything was open except the Highlands expert area. Temperature was again around 33 degrees with blue skies and no wind. Around 11 a.m. some clouds cooled things a bit, but the sun soon came out again. Snowmaking was in progress all day in the Highlands, the Dobie beginner trail area, at the base of Big Acorn, and on Eagles Swoop at the intersection with Trail Loop. In the morning the snow guns were firing on top of Eagles Swoop.

There weresome nice terrain rolls on the bottom of Sunrise and Big Acorn. The Sunrise surface bcame icy in the afternoon. Watch out for the deep shadows on Big Acorn after 3 p.m.

Other notes: Monday lift lines started to become noticeable at 2:30 p.m. Didn’t encounter any bump runs, sorry mogul bashers. Upper Diamond Hill, formerly NASTAR course (Blue) is now a Terrain Park (Black).
