Snowshoe Begins Snowmaking 15
Author thumbnail By M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor

West Virginia’s Snowshoe Mountain Resort fired up its snowguns on Saturday night, taking advantage of sub-freezing temperatures in an effort to lay down a base for an anticipated November 21 opening date. For the past two nights, temperatures dropped into the low 20’s at Snowshoe’s 4,800-foot elevation.

Snowshoe ran 30 guns at the Snowshoe area and 10 guns at the Silver Creek area. Milder temperatures early this week will delay additional snowmaking until Thursday night, when Snowshoe expects temperatures to dip back into the 20’s.

The following photos were taken on Sunday and Monday morning.

I see we've reduced ourselves to punctuation marks. Summer wasn't -that- long. (Grin)

A look at the extended forecast suggests that Snowshoe will miss their opening date :. especially since it poured the rain there today and temps were 60.

The traditional opening date for Snowshoe is the day before Thanksgiving. Anything that happens before that date is gravy. The 21st is probably in doubt at this point, but the Snowshoe management told me that the resort will be firing up 200 guns on Silver Creek and the Basin as soon as the thermometer drops again.

Furthermore, this next spurt of cold air should should give the resort a few good nights to make snow so let's keep our fingers crossed for the 21st but realize that the resort probably will not open until the 26th.

Too bad that SNOWSHOE can not take advantage of the increased web site activity that the DCSKI posting about snowmaking should generate. The link gets one to a website a week out of date, and with a forecast and realtime weather station that never works. One would think that a world class resort like Snowshoe would invest in a web site that is better than any around, especially when it comes to realtime weather info. But alas this is not the case, and althought I have communicated this with them numerous times...they do not seem to care!

Doesn't matter if mother nature adds to it -- mother nature added 215" last year and they are not here right now. If the temps and rain dont stay away, they will not meet their target date. As the extended forecast looks now, no cigar.

Colonel.. When I check Snowshoe's web site and go to the weather section, it's up-to-date (at least as of today).. Are you sure your browser isn't caching an old copy? How are you getting to their weather page?

They can open by sat the 22nd for sure. That would give them 8 days of snowmaking with 2 days off . how many days did killington need 3 or 4?? that is snowgun version of shock & awe!

Killington doesn't have rain in their forecase either... I still don't see Shoe making the date.

Kmart has a much heavier battery for their FP fire mission, and colder weather.

I am not saying SS won't make the date - I hope they do. However... no way is a Canaan guy like me going to stand in their epic lift lines: if I am firing up the Jeep for 5 hours I am heading north of the Mason Dixon.

I gotta hand it to SS tho - for mid atlantic they have the hairy Yeti balls to atleast TRY to make a season of it. Jeez Timberline could do so much more than SS but they don't.

Water restrictions suck!! WHY are TL and Canaan so hobbled by water restrictions?
