A new mid-slope facility is under construction at Virginia’s Wintergreen Resort, and when it opens, it will provide services such as food and beverages, a lift ticket/tubing ticket outlet, locker space, and restrooms.

The building is being constructed of “ample glass, stone and natural wood. With sweeping views of the mountains, it will have a cozy ‘lodge’ feeling,” explained Jeff Moore, Vice-President of Facilities for the resort.

New parking space adjacent to the building will support 200 cars, and a wrap-around viewing deck will offer panoramic views of the slopes and surrounding mountains.

Wintergreen will also unveil “The Slide,” a new tubing park designed to provide a more gental downhill experience for younger children and those preferring a calmer ride.

Wintergreen is also investing in a new, state-of-the-art snowmaking system that will automatically adjust the mixture of air to water for better snow.

Wintergreen is situated at a nice location in the Apps, but it is quite difficult to get to. Crowding is an unavoidable problem most of the time, as many skiers will pay the outrageous lift ticket prices. If you want to go skiing there, make sure you have plenty of money. I was surprised at the terrain there, as I thought many of the southeastern resorts are small; suffice to say, it was larger than I thought. I would like to go again, but definitely don't want to pay the through-the-roof lift ticket and equipment rental prices. Skiing just shouldn't be that expensive.
