It seems like a January thaw has become par for the course for the mid-Atlantic. Thankfully, a cold front has pushed away warm weather, and snowguns are now roaring back to life. Temperatures over the next week will remain chilly, with some chances for snow in the forecast.

Over the past week, warm and rainy weather ate away at resort bases, causing some trail counts to diminish. Then, temperatures dropped on January 17, enabling a welcome shot of overnight snowmaking just in time for the busy holiday weekend. Resorts to the south received some natural snow. As a cold front moved in on January 20, temperatures once again dropped below freezing, allowing snowguns to fire up. This should result in good conditions on Martin Luther King Day.

Monday sees the chance for some natural snow at many resorts, although accumulation is not expected to be significant. Temperatures over the next 5-10 days will remain below freezing with overnight lows dipping into the teens, providing a chance for significant snowmaking opportunities. If you can sneak away midweek, you should find excellent snow conditions. Towards the end of the week, there is another chance for natural snow showers. As January transitions into February, the mid-Atlantic ski industry should be running in high gear.
