Resort Overview - reported by M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor

Seven Springs Mountain Resort is located in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania, not far off the Pennsylvania turnpike. Seven Springs is an hour east of Pittsburgh.

One of the most popular resorts in the region, Seven Springs offers a diverse collection of slopes, trails, and glade areas. Thanks to its location, Seven Springs is blessed with an average annual snowfall of 150 inches, which it supplements with snowmaking. The resort features seven terrain parks, and has been recognized as home of the #1 terrain parks and pipes on the East Coast by readers of TransWorld SNOWBoarding and SKI magazine.

Two 6-seater high speed lifts help shuttle visitors efficiently to the top of the slopes, but Seven Springs can be crowded on weekends and holidays. The resort runs a strong Snowsports School, providing a wide variety of professional instruction for skiers and boarders of all ages. While the skiing and snowboarding are great, Seven Springs is a true destination resort, providing a wide variety of activities on- and off-slope. Lodging and dining options abound.

Summer Activities

Seven Springs is a year-round resort, offering plenty of activities in the summer such as mountain biking, canopy tours, sporting clays, zipline, full-service spa, and mountaintop golf course. Seven Springs can also host meetings and events.

Seven Springs resort, what can I say? It's all you can want and more in an Eastern ski resort. Located only about an hour from where I live in Pittsburgh, I can only be so lucky to have this GREAT resort nearby. You cannot argue the facts: 35 trails and slopes, over 750 feet vertical, and some great runs. If you visit Seven Springs in the near future, do not miss these great runs (all black diamonds): North Face slope, Gunnar slope, Giant Steps slope, Avalance slope, and the Goosebumps trail. These are probably five of the greatest runs you'll find in the East (except for some in Killington and other Vermont areas, of course). North Face slope has over 750 foot vertical, thanks to someone with one heck of a brain. They designed this slope to go into a valley, actually dipping down close to 200 feet below the lodge, making a great ride. Of course, there are plenty of green trails and blue cruisers. Turtleneck trail, a greener, is about 1.5 miles long. It's fun just to cruise and is perfect for learning. Then there are many, many blues for fun with the whole gang.

But let's not forget about snowboarders. Since 1984, Seven Springs has let snowboarders carve the slopes, but not until recently have they had a snowboard park. The snowboard park itself is close to 700 feet long, and 600 feet wide. There are many huge jumps and a half-pipe.

But, as with all resorts, there are some negatives I can point out. Since Seven Springs is such a great resort, it's not hard to find 30 minute waits on lift lines during weekends and holidays. Editor's note: Another reader notes that lift lines are now rarely longer than 8-10 minutes and usually much less, thanks in part to the new six-person high-speed lift.

Also, like one would expect, lift tickets are getting even pricier. Up to $40! But, it is well worth the price. Try coming during the week - no lift lines and cheaper lift tickets. Thanks to the many lifts and rope tows at Seven Springs, lines are usually kept to a mininum.

Snowmaking at Seven Springs is revolutionary. Thanks to many lakes and ponds and close to 900 snow towers and guns, Seven Springs can cover 95% of the slopes with 1 inch of snow per hour.

I would recommend Seven Springs to anyone looking for one heck of a ski resort. There is enough skiing here to keep your skiing experience new and exciting every time you visit. As the Seven Springs slogan says, 'Get into the Snow!'

I went to Seven Springs last winter for the first time. I usually go to Whitetail. The only thing I was disappointed with was Seven Spring's lift service. Whitetail has a high-speed detachable quad and Seven Springs doesn't." (Editor's note: Seven Springs added a 6-person high speed lift for the 2001-2002 winter season.)

Seven Springs has it all. Great skiing, short lift lines, good eatin', and location, location, location. Located just less than a hour from my house in the South Suburbs of Pittsburgh, Seven Springs has everything to keep my "Vail longing" at bay. I visit Colorado ski resorts 2-5 times a year, and when I'm not getting altitude sickness in the Rockies, I love crusing down the long black diamonds at Seven Springs. Most of the time, people hate to get back on their home slopes after a long ski trip to Vail, but Seven Springs calms that longing for 5 mile runs straight down 7,000 vertical feet. Many people are disappointed when they first walk out of the lodge and see the first couple of visible slopes at Seven Springs. They're nothing special. However, a short ride up to the top of the "mountian" and you are greeted with the "North Face", opposite the lodge, my favorite area of the resort. On the North Face there are 4 long black diamond runs that can compare to some runs at Killington.

... Although the front of Seven Springs is picturesque with how it's nestled, it's surprisingly short. Eegads, I could barely work out 2 dozen tight turns on the board before I was at the bottom of the hill. Mind you, I really enjoyed it (and certainly at the end of the day when it was easier to squeak out a couple more front-side short runs and work them hard than slack off on the North Face and not work the turns).

Please reel in the comments about the vertical at Seven Springs sounding like a good thing. I was sorely misled. That mountain doesn't really have difficult terrain to speak of and the runs are only long on North Face because there's so much lead-in and run-off on the runs. First day on snow this year and we were doing top-to-bottom for nearly all runs without any quad burns. Gads, give me some vertical. Mind you, again, we had a good time on the bottom because they did some good planning, but ... there's just not that much vertical. It does not satisfy my longing for Vail as one of the reviews said, but it was good to get out on the snow and carve some turns...

At 32 degrees, water becomes FUN, but not at 7 Springs. Don't believe all the hype! I have been riding for 13 years and make 3-5 trips to the west each year and multiple short trips to WV, and NY. 7 Springs has too many short runs with long flats. Even with the addition of the 6 passenger lift, weekend lines are over a 30 minute wait. The crowds are a serious issue and it is not uncommon to have to avoid out of control riders that are cannonballing down the slopes. Many of the slopes have bottlenecks where the crowds back up. Additionally, there are NO high speed lifts on the North Face, which is where the 750' of vertical lies. So while it can be fun to ride down the North Face, getting to the top is a long and windy ride as most of the lifts are totally exposed.
None of the terrain here is that difficult to ride, the diamonds would only qualify as squares if these runs were in Killlington or anywhere out west. 7 Springs manages to get high rankings because of their snow making abilities and apres ski activities, not for their runs.
The groomers do a terible job at this resort and more than one day was wasted on slopes that were destroyed by the groomers. Also, the web-site frequently advertises snowfalls that must have been measured in a drift against the building. True riders will have a better time at Snowshoe in WV, or Holiday Valley in NY as these are both quality resorts with true vertical.

P.S. I am a seasons pass holder at 7 Springs because it is the best option I have available within an hours drive. I also log over 50 days of riding per year.

Seven Springs Expansion
Does anybody know when Seven Springs is going to continue their Master Plan which was for a cliffs area and when will they get the Western area open. Everytime I ski their all I see is future expansion. If anybody knows good you please tell me when 7 springs is going to up their trail and lift count.
Thank You

Let's face it, we live in the Mid-Atlantic area and as far as I'm concerned, we are lucky to have any ski areas at all. The local areas do a great job with snow making, grooming and safety. It's been in the 40's and 50's for the last two weeks and we are still able to ski. Yes, some of us are better than the rest and for them I say, "Go west young person". For the rest of us I'm happy to have areas like Seven Springs, Liberty, White Tail and the rest. We are lucky to have anything white to slide on.

Comments on Seven Springs
Seven Springs doesn't have anything approaching steep and the vert isn't impressive even by Mid Atlantic standards. Check Blue Knob, Whitetail, Laurel Mountain, Snowshoe, Timberline. All have greater vertical drops. None, however, can match Seven Springs for snowmaking, width of runs, and the ability to use the trees with minimal natural snow. Seven Springs is 100% open 2 weeks after the weather turns cold and 6 inches of natural snow and you're in the glades. This is what makes the place good.

Waterpark promised for 2006.........

Seven Springs will never be a true 4 season resort like Wisp with no Waterpark!

Comments on Seven Springs
a great place, summer OR winter...I have to laugh at those who would compare Blue Knob with 7-Springs...puh-lease...sure, Blue Knob is the 'highest skiable' peak in PA but it's poorly managed and taken care of and most runs are even shorter than those at 7-Springs...Also, Holiday Valley in NY is very similar in vertical and runs to 7-Springs...it's nice to ski something new but it's no better (except for numerous high-speeds!!) than the springs...Snowshoe in W.VA is admittedly awesome, especially the Western area with Cupps Run and Shays Revenge (I think...)...for the price, location and what they offer Seven Springs is VERY GOOD!...nice golf course too...kicked my butt anyway!!

Been skiing there for nearly 30 years. Sure, it's the best option in the Pittsburgh area, but that's not saying much if you really like to ski. I guess I've been spoiled by yearly ski vacations to the Rockies, but I find it hard to get excited about a day at the Springs any more. $52 for a lift ticket plus another $40 in travel expenses, lunch, etc. $100 is a lot of money to spend for long lift lines, a ton of skiers on the slopes (many out of control), short runs and nothing steep or challenging (unless skiing on ice is your idea of fun). It pretty much sucks by western standards. I only ski a handful of days there anymore to get in shape for vacation.

Comments on Seven Springs
seven springs is worse than moldy cheese. outrageous prices, poorly managed lift lines, lots of flat areas on a lot of trails. lest i forget to mention the ice. if the snow report says some icy spots its one giant sheet of ice not to mention that the bottleneck on the frontside of the mountain is a cluster fck if i've ever seen one. one more thing lots of people comment on the fact that seven springs opens before many other resorts i have found this to be due to the fact that they will encourage you to destroy your equiptment on their trails at the beginning of the year slopes and trails are often open early despite the presence of gravel patches and baseball sized rocks on the slopes. maybe someday i will get the pleasure of hitting the springs when there is some actual snow instead of groomed granular (code name for ice)

I hope that Robert Nutting has a long term plan for what he is doing to the Springs. His efforts are poor.I will no longer go to this resort.

Comments on Seven Springs
Last weekend I noticed not enough staff running liftlines, some things not taken care of like they used to be. The lodge improvements seem nice, but I left with the impression Seven Springs is cutting back on some stuff they shouldn't.

Expansion?
If Nutting is going to raise the price of lift tickets then i think we need to see some expansion, does anyone have any info on the expansion that was brought up years ago??

Seven Springs vs. Hidden Valley
This is in addition to my last posting...

We all know that 7 springs has better terrain than hidden valley....but for how long? Hidden valley is developing some steeper, higher terrain. HELLO NUTTING!!!!! take some notes on what Buncher is doing for hidden valley. If Nutting is going to keep 7 springs ahead of hidden valley then he needs to shift his thoughts towards developing the Great Western territory for 7 springs. Anyone agree??

Seven Springs vs. Hidden Valley
Yes Jordan I agree with you. They also need to add other areas of the mountain, they cant keep adding condos and not adding anymore terrain.

Comments on Seven Springs
Yeah. people come for the skiing...not the condos plus it is getting to the point where the normal weekend skier can't afford the condos or the skiing

Comments on Seven Springs
If it wasn't for the economic meltdown of 2008, we would be skiing on the new terrain at HV. I have walked this terrain and it will add some needed challenge to HV. I like skiing at 7S, but I avoid it on the weekends. It gets scary skiing on the north face with the amount of skier traffic that is there. They need to add the Western Territory to compete with HV. I might also add that HV's snow, now made witht those Italian Techno Alpin snow guns, is much better than the snow produced by the HKD system at 7S. I was surprised how icy 7S was after a 6" snow fall. At the same time, HV snow was much less icy.

HV is still small compared to 7S and 7S is a great resort, but I agree that the terrain expansion is needed...not more spa services!

Comments on Seven Springs
It is obvious that 7S is trying to attract visitors from Nemacolin Woodlands with Sporting Clays, and now the Spa. Time will tell if the Laurel Highlands can support so many facilities like this, Bedford Springs, etc, and would have to wonder how profitable these places are in the current economy.

To the degree this is coming at the expense of upgraded/expanded slopes at 7S is hard to say, and suppose it is their choice of what direction they want to take things.

If HV can add some challenging terrain, even if it will never be the size of 7S, but get skiers up the mountain without long lines and at a reasonable ticket price, that has an attraction all it's own.

Comments on Seven Springs
This may sound dumb, but it the White Mountain area on the back of 7S where the western expansion was supposed to be? (I don't know much about White Mountain)

Comments on Seven Springs
Maybe.

Western Expansion was supposed to build into the Neals Run valley. White Mt sits atop the ridge to the south of that valley, WNW of the old 7 Springs airport. I think it would be difficult for 7S to expand the slopes up onto the old White Mt property , since they would have to cross over Pritts Distillery Rd to do so. That road enters Forbes State Forest, so I don't think they can close it the way they can Neals Run Rd. If anything, the lower part of the White Mt property might be good for future ski in/ski out homes if/where the western expansion gets built. If someone was really interested in sleuthing it out, all the parcels in that valley/run can be found on the Fayette Co tax assessment website. http://www.fayetteproperty.org/ It does help to know that they spell Distillery 'DSTLRY'

Comments on Seven Springs
Thanks for the info, I just wish 7S would start caring more about skiing and not fancy crap that nobody wants to use

Comments on Seven Springs
Seven Springs was once good, affordable and fun....then Bob Nutting took over and is running it into the ground much like he runs the Pittsburgh Pirates. More condo's, more luxury items, no new terrain. The prices go up yearly, yet the skiing remains awful. At least when the skiing was awful under previous ownership, it was about $25 cheaper. I can't justify paying $65 a day for 7S when I paid $75 for Vail. I'd rather just ski Hidden Valley and save a TON! I understand only so much can be done with the small mountains, but that should be reflected in the price. Go to Snowshoe in WV, it's awesome for the east if you don't want to drive 10 hours to Vermont.

Comments on Seven Springs
I'm from out-of-state, and every year we drive the 8 hours to 7S as part of a family tradition we've had going for years. Unfortunately, what they say is true... there has been much more emphasis placed on the "resort" than the "ski" in recent years. It's still a good place to board, as far as I'm concerned...not as great as some of the places you'll find in NY, for instance, but like somebody said, it's the Midatlantic. You can't possibly expect a Colorado-esque experience.

I spotted an eror in the first review.Where it says 1 inch of snow an hour they meen 1 inch of ice an hour! The fact is that seven springs is a giant sheet of ice wich makes terrible skiing.

oh! frogot 1more thing. Before you go to 7s remember they took away laurel mountain so they could charge higher lift prices.

Comments on Seven Springs
You are not right bill!laurel mountain had to be closed because their lifts was out dated and would not pass inspection... They actaully have new ones ordered and will be open for the 2011-2012 season

Laurel mountain
OK!!!!!!!!!!!Andy. Im just saying I have seen no improvements over the past couple of years. Yes i aso know the Double lift would never pass inspection. IF what you are saying is true I would like to know where you saw or heard this information.

7springs a train wreck
7springs is a train wreck. With sky high lift prices you would think that every thing would be next to perfect. Infact it is the EXACT OPPOSITE. The best for families reward they won is a joke. 7springs is a very drunk resort and it is comon to see empty beer cans on the slopes. The food has become worse than ever. The snow making is also terable compared to other nearby resorts. All it produces is ice. I hope Bob nutting has good plans because so far all he has focused on is the resort and has ignored the skiing. I have stopped believing that there will be a future expansion.

7S Police no longer..
Heard a couple issues from some condo owner friends....
That the resort would not pitch in for the community's police so as of midnight 12/31/10 they are no longer. ...
With kids I'm concerned that if something goes down we'll have to wait on the state police. Having to rely on Bar Security and Ski Patrol (??Ski Rangers which are lift line attendents) are a concern particular on some of the 3 day weekends and the clients the bring.
We hope they have a plan in place to address this but in the mean time we're taking this into account planning our family trips this season. Particularly after the experience my 12 yo daughter had in lift line last year with one of the rangers grabbing her lift ticket and being "unkind" (yelling at her). Thanks to the two locals who stood up for her and let the ranger know he was OB.

their snow making is still crap though!

Ok, paying $20 or $30 to celebrate New Years at 7 Springs is definitely not worth it. Last year was so much more fun. There better celebrations were held at the house/condos parties in the area.

In the Foggy Goggle and the Matterhorn I encountered the lames group of people ever. In the goggle, whats up with that so called food and where was the sauerkraut after mid night? In the Matterhorn, where were the people? Who ever say they were sold out needs to wake up. Management made such a big deal, and in the Matterhorn the band was good and thats all. Where were the people? Who ever said they were sold out needs to wake up. Bob Nutting you really tank on this one. All those people that did not get tickets were better off. This sucked. Seven Springs Mountain Resort is not the place to celebrate New Years. A normal Saturday night during ski season is so much better.

The only place that was free was the Bavarian Lounge. But where was the entertainment?
Was the jukebox working? NOT! How about all those people that checked into the hotel and were told all the events were sold out. Most of these people just stayed in their room with the premise to never return to 7 Springs for a New Years celebration.

Now according to management they sent out emails informing people of the fee for the different celebrations. NOT!!! The marketing department needs to wake up. They dont have a clue of how to run this resort. If things have worked in the past, why change it? You would think you might get things right. But you constantly continue to fail miserable for the past two seasons.

Perfect example is the Season Kick Off Party. Season kick off party has been schedule for Thanksgiving weekend for the last twenty years and the marketing department in their wisdom ways decided to change the date. They have changed to the Sat before Thanksgiving and of course no one shows. Now for two years in a row there has been more staff than patrons at this event. Leave things alone!!

Can someone explain to me why 7Ss kept stopping the the ski lifts every so-may chairs over this last weekend. Is there something wrong with the equipment?

We saw their safety skiers running the lifts too and wonder if they are just fill ins or if they are new staff uniforms?

The stopages were particularly bad on the back side and two so-called express chairs.

To make matters even worse my pre-teen daughter purchased a hot chocolate at the cafe that was mostly water. Not a way to make points with mom on family ski weekend.

Have to admit the place was a lot quiter on NYE which was sort of weird (..kids thought that was bogus too)!

Comments on Seven Springs
I believe the Gunnar Lift is what you're referring to... There was an issue, but it has since been resolved. And the Safety Rangers fill in for lift operators as needed. The weather didn't help matters. It was unseasonably warm. As for your hot chocolate - that could happen anywhere. Sometimes it happens in my kitchen. Maybe next time take it back?

Well my family of 5 was stuck on that lift last Sat for over 20 minutes. Then on Sun. the Polar Bear was down in the AM for quite a while. All for $75 each for wife and I and $50 per kid.

Not Family Friendly
I cant believe that some people say this is a family resort. Seven Springs is probably the LEAST family friendly resort in the mid-a! The staff are rude, the prices are outrageous, recless skiers and boarders, icy conditions, bad ski school. I have been going to 7springs for years and recently it has badly declined. The blame is mostly focused toward the new owners of 7springs. 7springs use to be a great family resort where you could go and let your kids rome the mountain without worry. It is no longer like that. Now you could not do that because of the type of people that ski/board there. I have often had recless boarders run into me. the current price for skiing all day is 67 and will be 70 next season. That is way to much considering i paid 75 for vail. 7springs often is icy or bare considering the crowds and the old snowmaking system. (Installed 1960) It has the same snowmakers it had 50 years ago. finally the crowds. It is comon to wait 10-30 min. in lift lines. So far this year there have been numerous acounts of stolen skis, 20k in stolen wire, sexual asault, and kid napping. 7springs use to be a great resort but no longer is.:(

Not Family Friendly?-there was so much that is incorrect in the last post, I don't know where to begin. I have been a homeowner here for 15 years. There are more families than ever. Almost annoying how many kids are there now.

70 a lift ticket, bad snowmaking/grooming, over skied runs, sexual assault, kidnapping, stolen wire, 40 stolen skis/boards(so far this year), reckless teen agers, the crowds, mostly rude staff. No I think your the one whose incorrect. (

A weekend open-to-close ticket at Seven Springs is $68; that is competitive with many resorts in the region. (An equivalent ticket at Snowshoe, for example, is $79. An equivalent ticket at Whitetail is $66.) On a weekday, the all-day ticket at Seven Springs is $47 (it was $58 at Whitetail before they closed, and $79 at Snowshoe). Of course, with a little research, it isn't hard to find discounts on lift tickets.

If you're not happy with Seven Springs, that's fine, but let's keep things in perspective here. If Seven Springs lowered its ticket pricing, do you think that would help the crowded/over skied run problem you mention? A lesson in supply/demand might be in order.

Do you have any concrete evidence to suggest that the ski/board theft rate at Seven Springs is any higher than any other mid-Atlantic resort (particularly given the visitor rate)? Other resorts in this region do not report those statistics. Would you leave valuable property just sitting out in the open of a crowded spot? I sure wouldn't, regardless of where I was.

I find it odd that you have so many strong opinions of Seven Springs but continue to ski there. I mean, you would need to be skiing there regularly to make all of these strong, firsthand observations about its staff, quality of visitors, snow conditions, etc., right? And if you think it's so bad, why would you be skiing there so much and paying a price you think is so overpriced? There are dozens of resorts in this region you can pick from. And you may be surprised to find out that reckless boarders are present at every major resort on a busy weekend. If you don't like crowds, try going to a less popular resort.

I believe the saying goesKWhen there is smoke there is fire!!!
Folks might be unhappy with some aspects of the resort operations K perhaps they feel mgt is not paying attention to the complaints of the paying public! Almost every chair ride last week someone had some 7S hate going onK so mgt is missing the mark.
Since it was my first time up in a couple years this weekend I don't understand the effort on the stunt ditch but its fun to run throughK but it is definitely a sore spot for many V with snow sitting there and not at the high traffic areas! The Alley run is pretty sweet for all parties IMHO... gives the rats / kids a place to play while freeing up terrain for others (and its fun for grownups too).
Have to agree the food service is the pits K the cafe didn't milk (my kids) and only french fries for lunch (we ate late). My kids only eat healthy so I give them a big thumbs down (figuring a big resort that is going for a 4 star rating should be able to do better to cut down on the whining I heard). So well be packing food going forwardK which sux but beats the options.
The rest rooms are holes and the girls wanted nothing to do with them (and I have to agree as a dad just to keep the squawking down).
On the thumbs up side - Snow operations still does a great job! They work the terrain to the maxKgood spring coverage with multiple parks for the kids, well groomed cruisers for the wife and bumps galore for me. ..all in mid to late March! What I questions is why isnt their marketing dept working that? Maybe they are focused on opening day for baseball (another sore spot for locals or so I was toldK over and over again )! The Goggle is the Goggle, fun on the deck, but it was a lot slower than I remember it in years past.
As for theft and crime V I was told that senior mgt decided to nix the police force due to costsKso Im assuming they knew they would get hammered on crimeK or at least one hopes they were smart enough to realize that! However, I was surprised to hear of the types and degrees of the crimes V as parents we were shocked to say the least.
Vail its not (although the prices are Vail-ish) but it was funK but this weekend the kids are pushing for T-line. Well see how it plays out and who is open! Id go back to Seven Springs (just for the moguls) but I doubt the wife and kids will be willing to do the 3 hr drive.
I hope mgt figures out and addresses the issues prior to our next visit since that would make the lift rides more enjoyable for us day trippers!

Say what you want but this weekend was the last weekend of the 2010-2011 season and the resort did a REALLY GOOD JOB.
The coverage was much better than expected (good grooming and lift access), they had special prices on food and drinks, the 3 lifts we road supported a lot of terrain, no hassles with parking or access and all with blue sky weather.
Next week is pond skim... sure its not the legendary "Pond Jump" but if its nice weather it will be fun none the less. Only wish they would one a lift for a few final turns.
Thanks for a good season 7S.

1 terrain parks in the east, 1 superpipe in the east. skiing changed in the past 15 years, and springs has changed with it. if you want powder, go out west. don't blame the snowmaking, hidden valley has a ton of new fanjets and it's just as icy as springs come february. it's the weather in the mid-atlantic, the thawing then re-freezing that turns the skiing surface rock solid. skiing 70 days this past season, i can attest to the nasty conditions at times, but it comes with the climate! if it's 45 and sunny during the day, then 20 at night, OF COURSE it's going to be icy!

yes, food service is a bummer, but it's not as bad as it was 5 years ago. the police were phased out but the new security force has way more staff than the police ever did, and they're actively patrolling at all times, unlike the cops who would sleep in their cars in the back of the north lot (saw it more than once).

back to snowmaking, i'd like to hear where one particular reader got their statistics (installed 1960?) a close friend works in snowmaking up there and i've seen firsthand how much work they do updating and streamlining the system every summer. if you don't believe me, go up and have a look at how much of the plumbing is being dug up, replaced, and how many of the guns on the hill are less than 5 years old. they do this EVERY SUMMER! do yourself a favor, next time you're up there, tell one of the dudes in the brown carhartts and hard hats, walking the slopes with a shovel what a bad job they're doing, working 12-hour shifts to make the snow that rich, self-entitled city dwellers constantly feel the need to complain about. then explain to them how much you know about snowmaking in the mid-atlantic.

that's what i thought.

Last year heard from that there was going to be a 2 day mogul "A" freestyle event on the hill... now told the rumor is that its not happening! Can't get official details as to event or its cancelling. Whats up with that? Thought here finally was a chance to comp out more local...
Anyone know any details????
Come on 7S show some Freestyle LUV!

I think only a "B" event will be held at the resort for the little bumpers via the Alipne race club (WPSC?).
It would be nice to have a more local A of us but I doubt the Springs has a slope rated for a real A.

A USSA A (ECS) & B (EQS) mogul event will be held at 7Springs over the January 28 & 29th weekend.
The event will be run single line (no dual format) at this time on Alpine Meadow slope - right outside the Yurt and next to the new Olympic size Superpipe!
All competitors required to have a valid USSA competitors card and wear a helmet.
USSA rules and requirements can be found at http://www.ussa.org .
More details will be post on http://www.easternfreestyle.org/ and http://www.7springs.com as they come available.
A super big thank you goes out to 7Springs management for stepping in and making this happen. This will be the most southern USSA event held in the East.

Pretty crazy (in a good way) at 7Springs this weekend.

First there was Telepaloozia for the free heel crowd with instructions and races including a wild up hill / down hill venue with a Le Mans style start and mixed up hidden skis. Very entertaining!

Second there was a USSA A (ECS) & B (EQS) Mogul event (Mogul Smackdown) moved from Alpine Meadow to Gunnar slope (quicker lift service via 6 pack and better pitch for the A athletes). Even with the lousy weather every is experiencing 7S pulled it off (resorts in more NE locations floundered and had issues). Pretty impressive to watch kids age 7 and up bumping and jumping.

Well done 7S!

I could not believe how under staffed this mountain was. They had lift lines like you would not believe and lifts not opperating. They had nobody managing the long lift lines. i had to wait over 45 minutes for a bus to the parking lots. The food here is terrible. I had a turkey hogie that felt like a wet sock. I ate at Helen's and could not believe how poor the food quality was and the portions or I should say lack of . The snow was great thanks to the man upstairs but I will not take my family to this over priced under staffed mountains ever again. I will look to go to Holiday Valley or Snow Shoe. Bob you need to find someone to help you. You know nothing about skiers.

" Bob you need to find someone to help you. You know nothing about skiers"

As a homeowner at 7S I could not agree more. For all the "improvements" made since the Nuttings took over none have have improved the experience for regular skiers (unless you like parks/rails). They're going backwards fast. No one manages the liftlines except for the Polar Bear and those folks seem to despise customers. HV now has better snowmaking equipment but 7S doesnt even utilize the antiquated equopment they have. Conditions are great this week due to mother nature. Once our normal cycle of cold/warm returns their conditions will again fall far behind Hidden Valley.

Rant from former season pass holder...

Where are all the cars Bob!

I skied 7S on Thursday Feb 14, where has everyone gone Mr. Nutting?
On only my 2nd day trip this season to 7S, driving from Wheeling Wv, I pulled into the parking lot on North Face at 10am, being a bit late for first tracks, I was worried I would have to hike a bit from my car, but no, I was able to park right in the front row! Where are all the cars?, where are all the people wanting for first tracks?. This is the middle of Winter, nearly a blue bird day with wonderful new soft groomed snow all over the slopes every where you looked and every where I skied!

I remember in years past, on a wonderful day like this, people would play hooky from work or school just to be here. And the midweek pass holders would be out in droves. Again I ask, "Where are all the cars Bob?"

Bob, I noticed your not running Tyrol lift midweek, or was it just broken down? Did the men that run the lift not come to work that day? I wonder Bob, you know its very difficult to ski the Front Face with just Avalanche lift running, Seems like the resort is lacking in skier service.

Oh wait, I did notice one lonely skier taken advantage of the large piles of snow you have made on Alpine Meadows, he seemed quite happy with all that effort you made there, all by himself. For myself, I could only think of the lack of base I seen on Giant Steps and Gunner, It didn't look like the base could survive much of a spring melt.

Again I ask, where are all the cars Bob?

Bob, I want you to watch Facebook this week, Snowshoe's Facebook page to be exact. On the 19th of February they are announcing a killer season pass deal!.

Bob, I think those hillbillies from Southern West Virginia have figured it out. Lower the price of admission to play on the snow and more people will come, more people will fill the parking lot, more people will consume more food and drinks. More people staying at the hotel. More lifts will needed to run, because there is more people on the slopes.

Bob, I'm sorry I couldn't afford your season pass this year. In years pass, I was able to afford both your season pass and Snowshoe's season pass. Things being hard these days, I made the choice of Snowshoes season pass, the early purchase deal.

Bob, I hope you understand.....

Regards,
ILV2SKI

Rode up on the North Face today with a guy that works at 7 Springs on the snow making crew.He pointed out the additional guns on the top of North Face as well as the water pipe that feeds them is new going from a 4" to an 8" pipe. Definitely better quality snow on the top of the usually very icy first pitch on North Face. Keep up the improvements.

As others have mentioned, 7S seems totally snowboarder focused at this point. That half-pipe looks Olympic-grade, as far as I can tell. Not much else there is. Another way that Snowshoe is eating 7S's lunch is food. The food at 7S is borderline inedible, and ridiculously expensive. Had lunch at the Foggy Goggle last week -- a turkey sandwich and two beers: $35 after tip. I don't pick ski resorts based on food, but when I went back today, I stashed my lunch and a couple of craft beers in the car. It's a pain in the ass to hike back to the car, but it's not even about the money; The turkey sandwich I brought was made with fresh bread instead of a "pretzel roll" that tasted like it was taken out of the freezer and microwaved. Regardless, every time I go to 7S I feel like I'm overpaying for everything, and it's pretty clear that with skis on, I'm not their priority.

One benefit of declining attendance: shorter lift lines.

I am so sad to see how poorly this resort is run now. It breaks my heart I have skied this mountain all my life and Bob has ruined it. They closed the mountain at 6 pm on one of the best days of the season. I have skied through rain from snow makers. Horrible grooming and not enough chairs open to get around the mountain. I don't know who is advising on how to run the mountain, but they should be fired. I hate to do it but I will be skiing at Hidden Valley next year. I have heard raves about the snowmaking and grooming they are doing. Hopefully you don't get involved there. You need to hire some good advisers PLEASE!

1 in parks and pipes, 99 in skiing
They no longer care about what had been their core customer - loyal hard core skiers - folks need to find another mountain

why nutting why?
This used to be such a nice mountain. now its a poorly maintained, over priced ice rink with rocks dirt and beer cans all over it. only decent part of this mountain is the parks. I cannot wait to see this place go bankrupt so nutting will sell, but until then i'm Hidden Valley bound!!!

Everyone complaining about how nutting runs his resort and threatening to go to another resort are wasting time. Nutting is running his resort just as planned. A money maker. This resort is not going bankrupt, on the contrary, it is making huge money. Yes the food is terrible, snow making terrible and only run to make snow for terrain parks, lifts not running on busy weekends (i could go on) but have you ever noticed it is always packed. He will never sell, and a few weekend skiers going elsewhere will not effect nutting one way or another. The people that complain most likely still go to pirate games.

Number One in Parks and Pipes
To respond to the comment above, its likely that anyone, myself included, who posts on a message board is wasting their time.

That said, getting the word out that Seven Springs has become a second rate place to ski may benefit others who may contemplating spending hundreds or thousands of hard earned dollars on a visit to the resort. For the record Im also a former season ticket holder of the Pirates. I work across the street from PNC Park and wont walk through the gates even when offered a free ticket (which happens often) Ive held a season pass at Seven Springs for more than 30 years and this year will be my last.

Yes the place is still busy on weekends but I know of plenty of frustrated customers who are now headed elsewhere. Unlike baseball fans, skiers have other options.

For that minute sliver of the populations who wants a 22 half pipe, go immediately to Seven Springs. Youll have the half pipe to yourself.

Seven springs is nowhere near as busy as it use to be. Actually heard a rumor from a friend that works at valley who was told that so far they have well over 2000 new pass holders (told me that 2 days after they went on sale). And that number is getting bigger daily. If its that high at valley imagine what its like at wisp or blue knob. As i said before it would not surprise me if they went bankrupt for the winter months. It takes MILiONS to build a park structure such as theirs and if there arent enough paying customers they have 2 choices go bankrupt or get rid of the parks. After what we have seen has been prioritized this season i think the answer to that question is pretty obvious. Probably wont happen next season but it will in the near future.

Ps. I have not been to a pirates game in 10 years

I agree with above. People need to be aware of how bad this place has become. It's time for us to start educating the "tourists" about hidden valley.
