Resort Overview - reported by M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor

Seven Springs Mountain Resort is located in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania, not far off the Pennsylvania turnpike. Seven Springs is an hour east of Pittsburgh.

Seven Springs has a rich history. In 1932, founder Adolph Dupre built a Bavarian cabin for his family; by 1935, the world’s first mechanical rope tow pulled skiers up the top of the mountain, powered by a Packard automobile engine. Seven Springs has been growing ever since.

During the summer of 1999, Colorado-based Booth Creek Ski Holdings made a bid to purchase Seven Springs. Booth Creek is the fourth-largest ski area operator in the nation. However, this bid fell through later the following spring, after a prolonged battle between three families that jointly own Seven Springs. Eventually things were resolved, and in the summer of 2006, Seven Springs changed hands — from the Dupre family to the Nutting family. Based out of Wheeling, West Virginia, the Nutting family owns Ogden Newspapers.

In recent years, Seven Springs has made some significant capital improvements. A new 6-seater high speed lift was added for the 2001-2002 winter season, one of the first to arrive in the Mid-Atlantic region (the second was at Virginia’s Wintergreen Resort, which now has two). For the 2006-2007 winter season, Seven Springs unveiled a new terrain park and superpipe. During 2007, Seven Springs installed its second “six pack” high-speed lift. In 2008, Seven Springs added a new terrain park, re-worked the Wagner slope, overhauled dining options in the Main Lodge, and added automation to its rental shop

Seven Springs often receives accolades from national ski publications. It has placed in the prestigious “top 50 resorts” list of Mountain Sports and Living magazine, formerly known as Snow Country magazine, and has consistently been a top-rated Mid-Atlantic resort by readers of SKI magazine, frequently capturing first place.

Seven Springs is truly a four-season resort, offering plenty of summertime activities like an alpine slide, bowling, golf, mountain biking, horseback riding, tennis, and volleyball. Seven Springs is a destination resort: on-site lodging includes 418 hotel rooms and suites, nearly 1,200 condos and townhomes, and several cabins and chalets.

Seven Springs receives an average of over 100 inches of natural snow each winter, and adds to that with its reknowned snowmaking. (Seven Springs has been making their own snow since 1960.) Seven Springs also has slopes lit for night skiing.

Good skiing is one well-known feature of Seven Springs; another equally important feature is good food, and Seven Springs has plenty of it.

Every Friday night, Seven Springs has a Seafood Buffet, offering a bounty of iced, steamed, fried, broiled, and boiled seafood to match any taste. A Grand Buffet follows on Saturday night, with all-you-can-eat chef-carved prime rib, petite lamb chops, roast pork, boneless chicken breast, and roasted sirloin tournedos of beef, along with beverages, salads, side dishes and desserts. All told, Seven Springs has 11 on-site restaurants served by a staff of 500.

Summer Activities

Seven Springs is a year-round resort, offering plenty of activities in the summer such as mountain biking and horseback riding. In particular, Seven Springs is a good place to hold an office meeting; Seven Springs has a full staff ready and willing to assist with meetings.

Comments on Seven Springs
Seven Springs resort, what can I say? It's all you can want and more in an Eastern ski resort. Located only about an hour from where I live in Pittsburgh, I can only be so lucky to have this GREAT resort nearby. You cannot argue the facts: 35 trails and slopes, over 750 feet vertical, and some great runs. If you visit Seven Springs in the near future, do not miss these great runs (all black diamonds): North Face slope, Gunnar slope, Giant Steps slope, Avalance slope, and the Goosebumps trail. These are probably five of the greatest runs you'll find in the East (except for some in Killington and other Vermont areas, of course). North Face slope has over 750 foot vertical, thanks to someone with one heck of a brain. They designed this slope to go into a valley, actually dipping down close to 200 feet below the lodge, making a great ride. Of course, there are plenty of green trails and blue cruisers. Turtleneck trail, a greener, is about 1.5 miles long. It's fun just to cruise and is perfect for learning. Then there are many, many blues for fun with the whole gang.

But let's not forget about snowboarders. Since 1984, Seven Springs has let snowboarders carve the slopes, but not until recently have they had a snowboard park. The snowboard park itself is close to 700 feet long, and 600 feet wide. There are many huge jumps and a half-pipe.

But, as with all resorts, there are some negatives I can point out. Since Seven Springs is such a great resort, it's not hard to find 30 minute waits on lift lines during weekends and holidays. Editor's note: Another reader notes that lift lines are now rarely longer than 8-10 minutes and usually much less, thanks in part to the new six-person high-speed lift.

Also, like one would expect, lift tickets are getting even pricier. Up to $40! But, it is well worth the price. Try coming during the week - no lift lines and cheaper lift tickets. Thanks to the many lifts and rope tows at Seven Springs, lines are usually kept to a mininum.

Snowmaking at Seven Springs is revolutionary. Thanks to many lakes and ponds and close to 900 snow towers and guns, Seven Springs can cover 95% of the slopes with 1 inch of snow per hour.

I would recommend Seven Springs to anyone looking for one heck of a ski resort. There is enough skiing here to keep your skiing experience new and exciting every time you visit. As the Seven Springs slogan says, 'Get into the Snow!'

I went to Seven Springs last winter for the first time. I usually go to Whitetail. The only thing I was disappointed with was Seven Spring's lift service. Whitetail has a high-speed detachable quad and Seven Springs doesn't." (Editor's note: Seven Springs added a 6-person high speed lift for the 2001-2002 winter season.)

Seven Springs has it all. Great skiing, short lift lines, good eatin', and location, location, location. Located just less than a hour from my house in the South Suburbs of Pittsburgh, Seven Springs has everything to keep my "Vail longing" at bay. I visit Colorado ski resorts 2-5 times a year, and when I'm not getting altitude sickness in the Rockies, I love crusing down the long black diamonds at Seven Springs. Most of the time, people hate to get back on their home slopes after a long ski trip to Vail, but Seven Springs calms that longing for 5 mile runs straight down 7,000 vertical feet. Many people are disappointed when they first walk out of the lodge and see the first couple of visible slopes at Seven Springs. They're nothing special. However, a short ride up to the top of the "mountian" and you are greeted with the "North Face", opposite the lodge, my favorite area of the resort. On the North Face there are 4 long black diamond runs that can compare to some runs at Killington.

Comments on Seven Springs
... Although the front of Seven Springs is picturesque with how it's nestled, it's surprisingly short. Eegads, I could barely work out 2 dozen tight turns on the board before I was at the bottom of the hill. Mind you, I really enjoyed it (and certainly at the end of the day when it was easier to squeak out a couple more front-side short runs and work them hard than slack off on the North Face and not work the turns).

Please reel in the comments about the vertical at Seven Springs sounding like a good thing. I was sorely misled. That mountain doesn't really have difficult terrain to speak of and the runs are only long on North Face because there's so much lead-in and run-off on the runs. First day on snow this year and we were doing top-to-bottom for nearly all runs without any quad burns. Gads, give me some vertical. Mind you, again, we had a good time on the bottom because they did some good planning, but ... there's just not that much vertical. It does not satisfy my longing for Vail as one of the reviews said, but it was good to get out on the snow and carve some turns...

At 32 degrees, water becomes FUN, but not at 7 Springs. Don't believe all the hype! I have been riding for 13 years and make 3-5 trips to the west each year and multiple short trips to WV, and NY. 7 Springs has too many short runs with long flats. Even with the addition of the 6 passenger lift, weekend lines are over a 30 minute wait. The crowds are a serious issue and it is not uncommon to have to avoid out of control riders that are cannonballing down the slopes. Many of the slopes have bottlenecks where the crowds back up. Additionally, there are NO high speed lifts on the North Face, which is where the 750' of vertical lies. So while it can be fun to ride down the North Face, getting to the top is a long and windy ride as most of the lifts are totally exposed.
None of the terrain here is that difficult to ride, the diamonds would only qualify as squares if these runs were in Killlington or anywhere out west. 7 Springs manages to get high rankings because of their snow making abilities and apres ski activities, not for their runs.
The groomers do a terible job at this resort and more than one day was wasted on slopes that were destroyed by the groomers. Also, the web-site frequently advertises snowfalls that must have been measured in a drift against the building. True riders will have a better time at Snowshoe in WV, or Holiday Valley in NY as these are both quality resorts with true vertical.

P.S. I am a seasons pass holder at 7 Springs because it is the best option I have available within an hours drive. I also log over 50 days of riding per year.

Seven Springs Expansion
Does anybody know when Seven Springs is going to continue their Master Plan which was for a cliffs area and when will they get the Western area open. Everytime I ski their all I see is future expansion. If anybody knows good you please tell me when 7 springs is going to up their trail and lift count.
Thank You

Let's face it, we live in the Mid-Atlantic area and as far as I'm concerned, we are lucky to have any ski areas at all. The local areas do a great job with snow making, grooming and safety. It's been in the 40's and 50's for the last two weeks and we are still able to ski. Yes, some of us are better than the rest and for them I say, "Go west young person". For the rest of us I'm happy to have areas like Seven Springs, Liberty, White Tail and the rest. We are lucky to have anything white to slide on.

Comments on Seven Springs
Seven Springs doesn't have anything approaching steep and the vert isn't impressive even by Mid Atlantic standards. Check Blue Knob, Whitetail, Laurel Mountain, Snowshoe, Timberline. All have greater vertical drops. None, however, can match Seven Springs for snowmaking, width of runs, and the ability to use the trees with minimal natural snow. Seven Springs is 100% open 2 weeks after the weather turns cold and 6 inches of natural snow and you're in the glades. This is what makes the place good.

Waterpark promised 2001........

Waterpark promised for 2006.........

2007 is here and I don't see a waterpark :(

Seven Springs will never be a true 4 season resort like Wisp with no Waterpark!

Comments on Seven Springs
a great place, summer OR winter...I have to laugh at those who would compare Blue Knob with 7-Springs...puh-lease...sure, Blue Knob is the 'highest skiable' peak in PA but it's poorly managed and taken care of and most runs are even shorter than those at 7-Springs...Also, Holiday Valley in NY is very similar in vertical and runs to 7-Springs...it's nice to ski something new but it's no better (except for numerous high-speeds!!) than the springs...Snowshoe in W.VA is admittedly awesome, especially the Western area with Cupps Run and Shays Revenge (I think...)...for the price, location and what they offer Seven Springs is VERY GOOD!...nice golf course too...kicked my butt anyway!!

Been skiing there for nearly 30 years. Sure, it's the best option in the Pittsburgh area, but that's not saying much if you really like to ski. I guess I've been spoiled by yearly ski vacations to the Rockies, but I find it hard to get excited about a day at the Springs any more. $52 for a lift ticket plus another $40 in travel expenses, lunch, etc. $100 is a lot of money to spend for long lift lines, a ton of skiers on the slopes (many out of control), short runs and nothing steep or challenging (unless skiing on ice is your idea of fun). It pretty much sucks by western standards. I only ski a handful of days there anymore to get in shape for vacation.

Comments on Seven Springs
seven springs is worse than moldy cheese. outrageous prices, poorly managed lift lines, lots of flat areas on a lot of trails. lest i forget to mention the ice. if the snow report says some icy spots its one giant sheet of ice not to mention that the bottleneck on the frontside of the mountain is a cluster fck if i've ever seen one. one more thing lots of people comment on the fact that seven springs opens before many other resorts i have found this to be due to the fact that they will encourage you to destroy your equiptment on their trails at the beginning of the year slopes and trails are often open early despite the presence of gravel patches and baseball sized rocks on the slopes. maybe someday i will get the pleasure of hitting the springs when there is some actual snow instead of groomed granular (code name for ice)

I hope that Robert Nutting has a long term plan for what he is doing to the Springs. His efforts are poor.I will no longer go to this resort.

Comments on Seven Springs
Last weekend I noticed not enough staff running liftlines, some things not taken care of like they used to be. The lodge improvements seem nice, but I left with the impression Seven Springs is cutting back on some stuff they shouldn't.

Expansion?
If Nutting is going to raise the price of lift tickets then i think we need to see some expansion, does anyone have any info on the expansion that was brought up years ago??

Seven Springs vs. Hidden Valley
This is in addition to my last posting...

We all know that 7 springs has better terrain than hidden valley....but for how long? Hidden valley is developing some steeper, higher terrain. HELLO NUTTING!!!!! take some notes on what Buncher is doing for hidden valley. If Nutting is going to keep 7 springs ahead of hidden valley then he needs to shift his thoughts towards developing the Great Western territory for 7 springs. Anyone agree??

Seven Springs vs. Hidden Valley
Yes Jordan I agree with you. They also need to add other areas of the mountain, they cant keep adding condos and not adding anymore terrain.

Comments on Seven Springs
Yeah. people come for the skiing...not the condos plus it is getting to the point where the normal weekend skier can't afford the condos or the skiing

Comments on Seven Springs
If it wasn't for the economic meltdown of 2008, we would be skiing on the new terrain at HV. I have walked this terrain and it will add some needed challenge to HV. I like skiing at 7S, but I avoid it on the weekends. It gets scary skiing on the north face with the amount of skier traffic that is there. They need to add the Western Territory to compete with HV. I might also add that HV's snow, now made witht those Italian Techno Alpin snow guns, is much better than the snow produced by the HKD system at 7S. I was surprised how icy 7S was after a 6" snow fall. At the same time, HV snow was much less icy.

HV is still small compared to 7S and 7S is a great resort, but I agree that the terrain expansion is needed...not more spa services!

Comments on Seven Springs
It is obvious that 7S is trying to attract visitors from Nemacolin Woodlands with Sporting Clays, and now the Spa. Time will tell if the Laurel Highlands can support so many facilities like this, Bedford Springs, etc, and would have to wonder how profitable these places are in the current economy.

To the degree this is coming at the expense of upgraded/expanded slopes at 7S is hard to say, and suppose it is their choice of what direction they want to take things.

If HV can add some challenging terrain, even if it will never be the size of 7S, but get skiers up the mountain without long lines and at a reasonable ticket price, that has an attraction all it's own.

Comments on Seven Springs
This may sound dumb, but it the White Mountain area on the back of 7S where the western expansion was supposed to be? (I don't know much about White Mountain)

Comments on Seven Springs
Maybe.

Western Expansion was supposed to build into the Neals Run valley. White Mt sits atop the ridge to the south of that valley, WNW of the old 7 Springs airport. I think it would be difficult for 7S to expand the slopes up onto the old White Mt property , since they would have to cross over Pritts Distillery Rd to do so. That road enters Forbes State Forest, so I don't think they can close it the way they can Neals Run Rd. If anything, the lower part of the White Mt property might be good for future ski in/ski out homes if/where the western expansion gets built. If someone was really interested in sleuthing it out, all the parcels in that valley/run can be found on the Fayette Co tax assessment website. http://www.fayetteproperty.org/ It does help to know that they spell Distillery 'DSTLRY'

Comments on Seven Springs
Thanks for the info, I just wish 7S would start caring more about skiing and not fancy crap that nobody wants to use

Comments on Seven Springs
Seven Springs was once good, affordable and fun....then Bob Nutting took over and is running it into the ground much like he runs the Pittsburgh Pirates. More condo's, more luxury items, no new terrain. The prices go up yearly, yet the skiing remains awful. At least when the skiing was awful under previous ownership, it was about $25 cheaper. I can't justify paying $65 a day for 7S when I paid $75 for Vail. I'd rather just ski Hidden Valley and save a TON! I understand only so much can be done with the small mountains, but that should be reflected in the price. Go to Snowshoe in WV, it's awesome for the east if you don't want to drive 10 hours to Vermont.

Comments on Seven Springs
I'm from out-of-state, and every year we drive the 8 hours to 7S as part of a family tradition we've had going for years. Unfortunately, what they say is true... there has been much more emphasis placed on the "resort" than the "ski" in recent years. It's still a good place to board, as far as I'm concerned...not as great as some of the places you'll find in NY, for instance, but like somebody said, it's the Midatlantic. You can't possibly expect a Colorado-esque experience.

Comments on Seven Springs
I spotted an eror in the first review.Where it says 1 inch of snow an hour they meen 1 inch of ice an hour! The fact is that seven springs is a giant sheet of ice wich makes terrible skiing.
