| Resort Overview - reported by M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor |
Note: As of November, 2011, Laurel Mountain will not be open for the 2011-2012 winter ski season. There remain some efforts to re-open Laurel in future seasons; read this DCSki story to learn more.
Rebirth of a classic: that summarizes the reopening of Laurel Mountain Ski Resort in 1999, after the Pennsylvania resort was forced to shut down in 1989. For its reopening, the resort was revived and significantly enhanced. Laurel Mountain is one of the hidden jewels of the Mid-Atlantic. One DCSki reader jokingly tried to bribe DCSki to ignore the story of Laurel Mountain’s rebirth so he could “have Laurel Mountain all to myself.”
Unfortunately, the history of Laurel Mountain Resort is like a roller coaster ride, and for the past couple seasons, the roller coaster has not left the station.
Shortly after reopening in 1999 after a decade-long closure, Laurel Mountain faced several seasons of mild winters. This struggle put the future of the resort in doubt during the Fall of 2003, when Laurel Mountain was placed on the auction block. Virginia-based HomeSpan Financial Group began to purchase the resort in November, 2003, hoping to open the resort for the 2003-2004 winter season. However, tragedy struck when the president of Home Span suddenly died. Laurel Mountain failed to open for the 2003-2004 season, and spent much of 2004 seeking a buyer or another arrangement that would allow the resort to open for the 2004-2005 season.
In October, 2004, a surprise announcement was made: Seven Springs announced that it would operate Laurel Mountain, under the name The Springs at Laurel Mountain, for the 2004-2005 season.
The ski area was open during the 2004-2005 season, but in the summer of 2005, the future of the resort was once again placed into question. Seven Springs announced during the Fall of 2005 that the Springs at Laurel Mountain would be closed for the 2005-2006 season. (The main Seven Springs Resort remained open, as always.) However, Seven Springs indicated that it planned to study improvements to make to the resort in the hopes of re-opening the resort during the 2006-2007 season. But Seven Springs was sold over the summer of 2006, and Laurel Mountain did not re-open. It remained on the open market.
Fast forward to 2008. Over the past summer, the future of Laurel Mountain seemed to reach a tipping point. Stakeholders began lobbying Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell for state funds to inject into the ski area. With the infusion of funding, the hope was that a local ski area operator - such as the Buncher Group, which purchased nearby Hidden Valley Resort in 2007, would step in and also operate Laurel Mountain. In August, 2008, Governor Rendell relayed his intention to provide up to $6.5 million in funding for infrastructure improvement to the ski area and to enable a company to step in and lease and operate the area.
On August 20, 2008, Seven Springs announced that it had entered into an agreement with the Somerset Trust Company to revive Laurel Mountain. But the timing of the re-opening remains unclear, and any potential impact of a global economic meltdown and tightening credit in late 2008 on Laurel’s re-opening area also unclear. However, there were strong steps made in 2008 towards re-opening Laurel, and for the first time in several years, it appears there may be hope for Laurel Mountain yet.
Suffice it to say, it’s been a bumpy ride.
Dating back to the mid-1930’s, Laurel Mountain has a rich heritage. Located in the scenic Ligonier region, the resort was first operated by the Mellon family, initially as a private resort. In 1958, the Mellon family made the ski area public. The ski area was turned over to the state of Pennsylvania in 1962, and various concessionaires operated the resort until March of 1989, when the resort was forced to shut down due to mild winters and a constrained water supply which restricted snowmaking.
There have been several failed attempts to reopen the resort over the past decade. In 1998, the newly-formed Laurel Mountain Ski Company - comprised of individuals with a love for the mountain - began developing a plan to reopen the resort, submitting a proposal to the State of Pennsylvania. The State accepted the proposal and the Laurel Mountain Ski Company signed a 35-year lease with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As part of the agreement, the State has provided a grant and loan to help fund the startup costs.
The agreement was reached and was followed by a flurry of activity in late 1999 to prepare for a December opening. Laurel Mountain offered plenty of improvements at its reopening as it welcomed back older generations of skiers - and entirely new generations that had yet to ski or board its slopes. Changes included a rebuilt lodge, new and upgraded lifts, a tubing park, a snowboard halfpipe and terrain park, new trails, enhanced snowmaking, and lighting. Few visitors to Laurel Mountain during its reopening were dissapointed. However, some warm winters following the reopening were not kind to the struggling resort.
DCSki readers report that Laurel Mountain has some of the most advanced terrain in the region - particularly Lower Wildcat, which is so steep that crews had to invent new techniques for putting in snowmaking pipes. Located within 493 acres of Laurel Mountain State Park, the area also offers some of the best views in the region.

When Laurel Mountain was operating, it featured affordable lift ticket prices and its own Professional Ski Instructors of American (PSIA) Certified Ski School.
Although there is no lodging on-site, there are numerous hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts within a 5-30 minute drive.
Cross-country ski trails are also located nearby.
| Summer Activities |
Located within the Laurel Mountain State Park, the Laurel Mountain Ski Area is surrounded by numerous opportunities for year-round recreation. For example, the State Park includes a network of mountain biking trails.

August 16, 2004 at 12:12 am Laurel Mountain has the best skiing up to Vermont. The Lower Wildcat is the steepest and there is a section they are planning to open that's even steeper. Your legs are like rubber at the bottom. It may only be a 900 foot vertical drop, but the trails are long and challenging. They are beautiful and with it being a state park and no lodging allowed, you ski right up to the lift, and don't have the crowds when skiing down. There are affordable cabin rentals one mile away.

July 10, 2005 at 7:49 am Anyone know if Laurel Mountain (7Springs' "The Springs at Laurel Mountain") will be open for the '05/'06 season? Maybe 7Springs own success is hurting the surrounding resorts including Hidden Valley.

November 11, 2005 at 4:37 pm Seven Springs announced in November, 2005 that the Springs at Laurel Mountain will be closed for the 2006-2006 winter season as it studies improvements that can be made to the ski area. It's possible Laurel Mountain will re-open for the 2006-2007 winter season, but it's too early to tell.

January 15, 2006 at 1:03 am My sons and I skied here a few years back and was sad to hear that it wouldn't open this season. With condos and realestate feeding the income for most resorts it's refreshing to go to an area like Laurel. Not just the cheaper ticket or lack of crowds. it's just a great place to ski and ski hard. I hope that Seven Springs can bring the mountain back to life if only to take the presure off of the crowds at their main resort. Whatever it takes I hope it happens. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing.

November 16, 2006 at 12:24 pm Once again Laurel Mountain will be closed. Its time the skiers who love the place get together, form a co-op, and get the place running. My personal opinion is a tax exempt co-op will be able to run it year after year and have profit to reinvest for expansion. The tickets will remain affordable, lift lines short, and in my opinion, some of the best skiing in Pa.

December 16, 2006 at 9:40 pm I agree about a co-op of true enthusiasts getting to run the place. It's a beautiful mountain, truly some nice terrain, and the lodge is practically brand new. I vaguely remember skiing here about 5 years ago and it was a real friendly place. The infastructure is all there, it just needs a serious owner (or 20) to get the place running. The only downside it that it's located in SWPA, so the snow conditions are not what I'd call condusive to reliable operation. Global warming is an ugly animal.

December 22, 2007 at 10:32 pm My family and I spent some great times at Laurel Mountain in 2002. I really liked the windy, narrow trails, lack of lift lines and low prices. Lower Wildcat offered a real challenge. The lodge had radiant heat in the floor that warmed up your feet nicely and dried up wet spots quickly. We really miss Laural Mountain and hope it reopens in the near future.

January 29, 2008 at 12:38 pm I just became aware of your website via the Chicago Tribune. I am a native Pennsylvanian and in my early twenty's skied Laurl, Blue Knob, Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, Canaan and more. Laurel Mountain was just beautiful! Even if you didn't ski it was lovely to be there! I remember taking my sister there to ski and she had never been on ski's in her life! We took the beginner trail, but Lynnie fell. I heard calls for help and stopped and turned around. The fabulous St. Bernard that lived at the lodge was sitting on her and she couldn't move! He was a fabulous rescue dog. When he saw a skier down he would lay on them to keep them warm. And, yes, he had brandy in his keg!

June 19, 2008 at 6:24 am My ex-wife and I skied Laurel once back in the late 80s. Drove down from Ohio for night skiing. Back then they only had the one old lift up the steep face running, which wasn't open. We had a good time skiing the left side, (looking down from above), and halfway down the middle then cutting over to the left side. That is all that was open. At the bottom you had to cut all the way back to the right to get to the old chairlift. The old lodge and bar were fun, and as I recall, getting a close-in parking space wasn't a problem either.
We used to ski Bristol a lot more if we went up for overnight, or Peak and Peek for a night trip too. Now I live just an hour away from Eldora Ski Resort, one of Colorado's smaller areas. Eldora just has 1,600 vertical and no high-speed lifts. Then again, the Corona Quad does all of the vertical in only 10 minutes straight up a black diamond face. Nothing like cruising Corona Bowl or Muleshoe on my old 210s when they are groomed. Comments on Laurel Mountain - posted by 7spring pass holder

January 15, 2009 at 9:17 am Seven Springs just purchased the assets of LM - perhaps to keep them from the HV owners.
I personally doubt LM will open next year - it would be nice - but I'll only believe it when I see it! Based on 7S is being run now I don't think that LM will support the high end big money doctor salary market! Besides hiking for the trees is better than a llift anyway! March 2, 2009 at 1:46 pm My thoughts are for Weekend Skier. WS, HV's owners backed out of the LM area. So your theory about SS buying the LM assets to keep them from HV is bunk.

January 26, 2010 at 5:16 pm I was able to ski and snowboard Laurel Mountain every day of the recent snowstorms when we had 3 feet of powder! Lower is a bit overgrown on the right side, but the left was primo!Actually the glades above Midway and below were my favorite! I hiked it 5 times in one day from top to bottom in snowboard boots so I definitely earned my turns. I hope it stays closed, so I don't have to buy a ticket to support 7 Springs.
The Best Ski Days Ever at Laurel - posted by Tobin from VT
February 23, 2010 at 2:23 pm I grew up skiing at Laurel. My dad built a rustic cabin along Laurel Summit Road in the early sixties. I remember skiing on wooden skis with woolen mittens frozen into the shape of claws from the rope tow. Our cabin had just a fireplace for heat and we slept on a row of old army cots but even though I have a house at Sugarbush, VT now nothing will ever compare to those glorious early days at Laurel Mtn. It was the true spirit of American skiing.

Less comp for 7S and we all know what he is doing to that once beautifully run resort flushing sound (unless you a clueless "Trail King")! But at least with good snow one can still earn those turns. Comments on Laurel Mountain - posted by Wildcat Man
September 28, 2010 at 1:48 pm I read a recent posting on DCSKI Forum where the Pa. DCNR says if 7Springs doesn't open, they are not offering it to others to open. It is nice for the Government working with Taxpayers dollars to have the brains to lease it to a wealthy man who doesn't seem to care if it is ever open again. He already has the main resort. I am buying Hidden Valley passes.

October 8, 2010 at 8:11 am Anyone who wants to see Laurel reopen has to keep up the pressure on the DCNR and local state reps, along with 7S. What I mean by pressure is to politely ask the status of Laurel when contacting the DCNR, inform state reps that reopening Laurel is good not only for the quality of life in western PA, but a job creator for a somewhat depressed area, and most importantly, contact 7S and inform them that since they have purchased the assets, they should push the state to get the ball rolling so Laurel can open in 2011. Also, politely ask 7S what improvements they plan on performing at Laurel with their own dime.

October 11, 2010 at 11:01 pm well I went to Laurel mountain over the weekend and walked around. The rumors that it will reopen this winter are a joke. the foam pads that are suposed to be on the lift poles, light poles, and snowguns are torn up and scatered everywhere. In the mid-way cabin there were holes in the floor and styrafoam beads were everywhere. Both lifts were rusted onthe cables, poles, and paartialy on the bull-wheels. But its not all bad news. It does look like somebody is cleaning up or renovating the lodge. It also looks like there are new parts on some the snow makers. But LM definatly wont open this season.

April 2, 2012 at 11:39 pm I am truly interested in forming a coop and reviving this beautiful mountain. It is sad that Noone has made any real progress on this place. Seems to me that the area yearns for a place to ski without being ripped off by bob nutting, or as the past employees of 7s refer to him, Satan. He ran that placecompletely into the ground with no regard to the rich history and family atmosphere that they once were renowned for. Now you can't ski down a single trail without running into beer cans and trash everywhere. Someone please get in touch with me about bringing a family friendly pristine resort back into the mix.

April 9, 2012 at 10:04 am Went home to Ligonier to visit family for the holiday weekend, and took a short jog up the mountain to check out the slopes. I was able to snap a few good pictures -let me know if any of you would be interetsed. I last skiied LM in March of 2005, but have been back many times since.

April 17, 2012 at 1:13 pm We made an attempt to start a co op and the state wouldn't even talk to us. They want Nutting in there so it will never open again. They gave him a golden contract where he can sit back forever and never pay a lease or need to develop.
