I bought the 3 for 1 pass for Snowshoe this year and was surprised at how pricey the on-mountain lodging options are.  In the past, I have stayed at the Cass Railroad State park houses.  I also just looked at VRBO and AirBnb which didn't have a lot of great options especially for a smaller group (or myself alone).

For coming from DC, are there are reasonably priced hotels or motels within an hour or two of Snowshoe so that I can get most of the driving out of the way the night before I want to ski?  In the past, I have also stayed in Elkins, which worked ok.  I don't need anything fancy at all.  Ideas?

South on 219 from Elkins

Valley View Motel  (304) 335-6226 - near Mill Creek WV

Brazenhead Inn 304-339-6917 Near Mingo WV

Way Off of 219 there is a place called Elk Springs Resort maybe a 30 - 35 minute drive to SS  877-ELK SPRINGS.

Across from the Inn is - Rte 66 Ski they have a few  rooms - 304-572-2200

If memory serves me correctly - Valley View was the cheapest.

Obviously, Elkins has a bunch of hotel options but it is an hour + away.

Elk River Touring Center  Its 5 miles from the base of SS.  They have a resturant and pub onsite.

I also send emails to the vrbo owners and to see if anyone will offer a deal.

Most owners will do deals during the mid week (Sun - Thu).  Weekends are like gold since SS started selling the $199 pass.  I have not had an open weekend in 2 years.

Hoyadrew - if you can do a mid week you can get a place on the slopes for just a little more than a hotel in Elkins.  Beats the hell out of driving all that way each day.

Another to add to the list, suggested on another thread:  The Brazenhead Inn.  I haven't stayed there, but the rates look pretty good:

If SS does the Ridiculous Pass again, I may pick passes up for my daughter and me and stay at this place one of the middle weekends in March.

Thanks everyone very much for the recommendations.  I myself can do midweek, but it's really hard to find other people who can come with me.  The Cass Railroad houses seem like a really great deal if you can get a larger group together.  I didn't realize they were only 9 miles from the resort.
