Firsthand Report: Liberty Mountain Fall Fest
By Connie Lawn, DCSki Columnist

October 18, 2009 — The clouds parted and the cold, miserable rain of the past few days ended on October 18, 2009. The sun shone, and the leaves on the trees were a glorious mix of red and gold. The grass carpet on the slopes is still glistening green, and the cold wind (despite the sun) brought hopes of snowmaking in the near future.

About 1,000 people flocked to Pennsylvania’s Liberty Mountain Resort to enjoy the annual festival and purchase their season passes at a discounted rate of $399. There is still time to get the discounted rate, through October 31st.

Liberty employees greeted guests at Liberty’s Fall Festival. From left: Ann Jungman, Ticketing Supervisor; Ava Winner, Hotel Manager; and Vicki Foth, Guest Services Supervisor. Photo provided by Charles Sneiderman.

The festival included a great buffet in the cafeteria and wonderful music by the Waynesboro bluegrass band, “The Boro Boogie Pickers.” Outside, there were Halloween festivities, ugly witches, crafts, and a chili taste off. Liberty is known for its special events and activities.

Liberty has the feel of a family-run operation, with many of the same employees and instructors returning each year. General Manager Eric Flynn encourages that closeness. In addition to Liberty, Eric is the Chief Operating Officer of Snow Time, Inc., so he also keeps a close eye on Whitetail and Ski Roundtop.

Eric says they expect a good season, following an excellent one last year. Many people are staying closer to home, and taking advantage of the discount deals, due to the economy. In addition, the snowmaking is great, and the resorts have a lot to offer. They are close — between one and two hours from the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas. There are some efforts this year to arrange shared transportation, to make the commute easier.

At the festival, Eric told us there is a major new chairlift on the more advanced back side of the mountain. The old chairs with the pole in the middle have been replaced by a high speed quad, which can move 2,400 people an hour.

Changes and improvements have also been made in the beginner area, making it easier to get onto and off the lift. For those starting out, there are learn to ski or snowboard specials for only $39. This includes lifts, instructions, and equipment. The offer runs from opening day to December 24, 2009.

So, think cold. It is soon time to head to the slopes!

Liberty Fall Fest
Connie, you're opening lines are dead-on ... the sky, the colors and the mountain at Liberty were all gorgeous! The forecast 24 hours ago was so lousy that I almost didn't make the trip up from the Shenandoah Valley this afternoon. 'Glad the free quick tune and free meal (to passholders) were enough to draw me there. I was pleased and surprised to see the good-sized crowd. Seems that everyone was enjoying themselves. Thanks for your pics and report!

Thank you Woody
Thank you for your comments! Much appreciated. It will be a great season. Yours, Connie
