Massanutten Community Impact Award

The Massanutten Community Impact Award honors those who have contributed significantly to the growth and development of the resort while also improving quality of life in the community. Through the consistent hard work and dedication of J.L. Hopkins, Henry Clark, Dice Hammer and Jim Lambert, Massanutten has been positively impacted and shaped into the resort it is today.

John ‘J.L.’ Hopkins III is a founding father of Massanutten Resort. His grandfather, Gerard T. Hopkins, had a vision for developing a health resort, and this vision was carried on by J.L., who purchased the land and solidified business partnerships to introduce Massanutten to the world on May 26, 1971.

Henry Clark, a lawyer for Massanutten Resort from 1977 until his passing in 2013, was an early investor in Massanutten Village who provided thoughtful planning and counsel for the resort. He and his wife, Mary Ann, were leaders in the mountain’s first time-share project with the goal to provide guests with luxury living in a condominium setting. Clark was a well-loved friend to everyone on the mountain and will always be remembered for his integrity and thoughtful counsel.

Business partners Dice Hammer and Jim Lambert pioneered the construction of the Shenandoah Villas’ timeshare condos and a $2 million ski expansion, boosting visits to Massanutten Resort to an all-time high. Under the leadership of Hammer and Lambert, Massanutten Resort has climbed the ranks and become one of the nation’s leading timeshare destinations.

Massanutten Champion Award

Steve Showalter, affectionately known as the ‘Mayor of Massanutten,’ is the recipient of the Massanutten Champion Award. This award recognizes someone who has made considerable contributions to Massanutten Resort, the surrounding region and the mountain sports industry. Under his leadership, Massanutten was the first area in the state to offer snow tubing and snowboarding. An advocate for creating impactful industry associations, Showalter served two terms as president of the Southeastern Ski Areas Association and on the board of the National Ski Areas Association, helping Massanutten Resort set standards in the hospitality industry.
