Actually, 7springs conditions page says they made some snow with ground guns. That doesn't sound as encouraging as it should for some reason.

I was surprised to see that 7 Springs did not make any snow last night. It seems like they had a good 4-5 hours of temps in the 26-27 degree range. That should have been enough time to pump out 5-6 inches and try to hold on until things (hopefully) cool off late next week.

I know in the past I've seen a good-size stash of snow sort of above Alpine Heights, visible from towards the top of the 6-pack lift. Maybe they've done that again this season and they're harvesting that snow to distribute over the trails?

My friend claims that the drive from Sacramento is not very pleasant in inclement weather--more mountain passes to cross. Also, there's more traffic coming from this direction. However, the Jet Blue flight is one of the better deals and direct as well--albeit a red eye flight.

Independence Air offers a cheap flight to Burlington from IAD. However, for two people, driving is a lot more economical (no air fares and no rental car fees).

I'm personally leaning towards VT because of cost. Stowe got 8 inches last night and opened up more terrain. They have 29 trails open, including Liftline, and powder conditions. However, who knows what it will be like in two weeks.

PS Thanks Snowcone on the tip about UT. I want to avoid crowds, so UT is now out for me.

Denis,

If you do make it out to Utah during MLK/Inaugaration week, send me a PM. That goes for any other DCSki Poster. I'm in Utah (SLC) from the 15-22.

I'm not locked in yet. Will probably make the decision over this weekend. Here are some ways you can spot me.

1.) I telemark (reasonably well).
2.) I have a 6" length of green & black plaid hanging from one pole strap as an identifier.
3.) Depending on US mail, I should have a DC Ski sticker on my helmet by then.
4.) My poles are wrapped with Mad River Glen red & white bumper stickers in lieu of a paint job. These are visible from a long distance.
5.) I have a stong preference for Alta.

1-4 are valid anytime, so if you see me locally ski up and say hello.

John,

I've heard that the slopes are empty during the Sundance Festival; PIB's (People in Black) generally don't ski. The restaurants and lodging in Park City will be heavily booked, however. The best skiing in Utah is not around Park City, so a trip to Utah is often a choice between convenience to snow/terrain and convenience to apres ski.

Would they even let you on the slopes in Stratton or Aspen or Vail in a get-up like that?

I've made the drive from Sac to Tahoe City before, Reno is much closer. We had serious holiday traffic and then some interesting weather through the Donner Pass, snow on Labor Day wknd in a rental Ford Ranger, yippee.

The couch I get to surf is in Tahoe City, north shore, and I've been told that all I need to do is get to the Reno airport.
I'm gonna listen to the local, just need a cheap flight from Harrisburg.

I am going to Tahoe (South Lake Tahoe area via Reno airport)during JAN 20-25 using Southwest @BWI which cost me $226.00 RT.

Hope there's enough snow out there for me.

As a reminder to others, that is the infamous Donner Pass.

I don't think it will be a washout. From next weekend on it looks like and extended period of very colde weather so snowmaking should be primo. I don't know if anyone has been to snowshoe recently but according to the trail reports the kickers are no longer in the terrain parks which translates into harvested for coverage. How good are conditions really? I always worry when they rip up the park for spare snow it usually means times are tough.
