may make my first trip to Mass. Wed. Will be coming in from the SE. Don't know the layout, looking for wisdom gained from the frequent day trippers.
Like to have quick, easy access to auto every couple of hours, to check on my travel mate.
Prefer out of the way or less frequent traffic, preferably not after a long slog to the end of a busy parking lot or through a major social spot. A walk in the woods would be cool!
Where should i purchase ticket and park?
Any tele riders in the area, mid-week?
be safe have fun Michael -- -- .

It was simply one of the best ski days of my life, Maybe even the best. There were more skiers than I expected but very few in the woods. The woods were where I was skiing bottomless untracked powder on every run in widely spaced trees with a few choke points. At my age I approach tree skiing with caution, but my confidence grew with every turn. It is all about the flow. You can't get it with a few turns then a stop. It takes 10 turns, 20, 30 50. When the flow kicks in it is mesmerizing. You never want to stop but eventually exhaustion compels it. I was on a new pair of skis, super fats with rockered tips, 125 mm waist and 155 mm tip. http://www.wildsnow.com/1039/megawatt-black-diamond-review-ski/ They were perfect for the conditions.
I have a date with the same place tomorrow.

I drove south on I-81 from Carlisle, PA to Winchester, VA this morning. The interstate in PA and VA was fine (just the usual caution needed on the snowy ramps), but I-81 in both MD and WV was a mess. Road surfaces on both were a bumpy mix of slush-covered asphalt and hardpacked icy snow. Traffic had slowed to a crawl, esp in WV where I ended up driving about 10 miles on a snowy but passable US R 11.
All in all, not surprising, in light of the storm -- 18" in Carlisle PA and 30" in Winchester (Biggest surprise was the good conditions in VA and PA). I reached Winchester at 1pm after leaving Carlisle around 10am.
Does anyone have more recent reports on road conditions on I-81 in MD and WV?
What about the roads leading to Whitetail?
Thanks, Woody

http://www.mammothmountain.com/MyMammoth/ (19" storm total) It is expected to snow another 10" or so before the storm ends tomorrow evening. You folks in metro DC/Baltimore are still ahead of us but not by much. It's still snowing here, lightly but continues to pile up. Patrol were bombing the cornice but didn't open it. I got some very good powder runs off #1 early - got in line 20 min before lift opening. As I expected half the population of LA showed up by 10 and it was tracked out by 11. Very foggy at times and I fell from vertigo a couple times. Almost got hit by young snowboarders many times. I took a long hot chocolate break at 10-10;30 then skied until almost 1 and quit. I sniffed and snooped and found short powder shots in the trees off 10, 5, 21 and when skiing down to the village gondola. A good day. Nevertheless I am going to June Mtn. http://www.junemountain.com/mtn_info/index.cfm tomorrow, a great little known area that is natural snow only. June is 5-6 miles from Mammoth as the crow flies and 25 by road. My Mammoth pass is good there and I know some great powder runs in the trees that always have untracked 2 or more days after the storm.
# Mammoth's 30 odd chairs are known to the locals by their numbers, the order in which they were built, not their names. 1 is Broadway, 10 is Goldrush Express. I don't know about the others

I rented a pair of demos last week from Stowe Toys that I liked . Dynastar Contact Cross Ti. They are willing to part with them for 50% of retail. After reading some reviews I am leaning towards buying them. Wondering if anyone has any opinion on these skis. My current skis are super lightweight beginner skis (Rossi Actys 100's '08 models) that do pretty well but did not have the edge-hold or the ability to cut through heavy powder that these guys do. I do not have a lot of money to sink into skis so if waiting is smart I can do that as well. Any input is welcome.

"You have stolen our snow." That is the constant refrain we are hearing here in Utah. We plan to ski Park City and Deer Valley - will keep you posted. So far, rain and not snow in Salt Lake City. We had a smooth flight on Delta, which actually left BWI early to outrace the winds. Spent our first nights at a great Super 8 Motel near the airport. For about $70 a night, a large room, high speed internet, breakfast, kitchen, heated indoor pool and spa, and dog friendly. It will cost us more in Park City, but we will be able to walk to the slopes. The Sundance Festival is over, and the big star visitor is "The Roaming Gnome." Hope we meet it! Enjoy the snow back home - hope our house survives! Connie and Charles
