Part 3: The Raw Statistics

Favorite Resort for Day Trips:

Whitetail Resort, PA

Runner-up:
Liberty Mountain Resort, PA

Honorable Mention:
Wintergreen Resort, VA and Blue Knob, PA

Whitetail and Liberty Mountain maintain their position as the top choice among DCSki readers for day trip areas. This mirrors the results of DCSki's last reader survey, in 2003. But a number of ski areas received a handful of votes from readers, including Wintergreen, Timberline, Seven Springs, Blue Knob, Snowshoe Mountain, Wisp, and Ski Roundtop.

Favorite Resort for Multi-Day Trips:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Timberline Resort, WV

Honorable Mention:
Seven Springs, PA, Wisp, MD, and Canaan Valley Resort, WV

There's no doubt about it, West Virginia ski areas are at the forefront of consideration when DCSki readers are planning a multi-day trip. Snowshoe won this category in 2003, but Timberline Resort edged out Seven Springs to grab second place.

Best Ski School:

Seven Springs Resort, PA

Runner-up:
Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Honorable Mention:
Liberty Mountain, PA, and Timberline Resort, WV

Seven Springs Resort climbed to first place in this category for the first time, edging out Snowshoe and Liberty.

Best for Children and Families:

Seven Springs Resort, PA

Runner-up:
Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Honorable Mention:
Wisp, MD

DCSki readers voted Seven Springs and Snowshoe Mountain the best resorts for children and families, echoing the results of DCSki's 2003 survey. But many readers gave votes to Liberty Mountain, Bryce, Canaan Valley, Wintergreen, and Hidden Valley.

Best Snow Conditions:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Seven Springs Resort, PA

Honorable Mention:
Wisp, MD, and Timberline Resort, WV

Snowshoe and Seven Springs maintain their rank as having the best snow conditions in the Mid-Atlantic region, whether the snow comes from snowgun or the sky.

Best Customer Service:

Whitetail Resort, PA

Runners-up:
Seven Springs, PA and Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Honorable Mention:
Wisp, MD, Wintergreen, VA and Liberty Mountain, PA

Since 2003, Whitetail has climbed to the top of the customer service ladder. In 2003, Seven Springs and Snowshoe received top billing in the customer service department. In 2008, Whitetail just edged out Seven Springs and Snowshoe (by two votes) to take first place.

Worst Customer Service:

Timberline Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

OK, so this isn't the category that most resorts strive to win. Despite having some of the best snow conditions around, readers were not impressed by the customer service of Timberline Resort. Snowshoe also had its detractors, despite tying for first place for Best Customer Service. Yeah, we know -- DCSki readers are a fickle bunch.

Best Aprés Ski:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, PA

Runner-up:
Seven Springs, PA

Nothing has changed in this category since 2003: if it's aprés ski you're looking for, look no further than Snowshoe or Seven Springs. Both offer a healthy selection of off-slope evening activities.

Best Year-Round Resort:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Wisp Resort, MD

Honorable Mention:
Wintergreen Resort, VA, and Seven Springs Resort, PA

Snowshoe maintains its position as the best year-round resort, offering ample recreational opportunities from winter through fall, but since 2003, Wisp has edged out Seven Springs to take second place. The addition of a Mountain Coaster at Wisp this past summer couldn't have hurt.

Best for Snowboarders:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, PA

Honorable Mention:
Big Boulder, PA, Whitetail Resort, PA, and Liberty Mountain, PA

Snowshoe is the favorite among snowboarders. In fact, Snowshoe received so many votes in this category that we're not awarding second place. But Big Boulder, Whitetail, and Liberty Mountain had their share of snowboarder fans. Since 2003, when it took second place in this category, Seven Springs saw its position among snowboarders plummet, garnering just one vote this time around.

Best Terrain Park:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Seven Springs Resort, PA

Honorable Mention:
Big Boulder, PA, and Liberty Mountain, PA

Terrain parks aren't just for snowboarders anymore, and Snowshoe continues to satisfy with its selection of well-maintained parks.

Most Undeveloped Potential:

Timberline Resort, WV

Runners-up:
Blue Knob, PA and Snowshoe Mountain, WV

As in 2003, DCSki readers continue to look admirably upon West Virginia's Timberline Resort, imagining what could be. (High speed lift, anyone?) Blue Knob and Snowshoe also garnered a lot of votes in this category, even though hundreds of millions of dollars in capital improvements have been poured into Snowshoe over the past decade.

Most Overrated:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Runners-up:
Timberline Resort, WV and Seven Springs Resort, PA

Sure, Snowshoe received top billing in a lot of categories: voted best year-round resort, best for snowboarders, best snow conditions, favorite multi-day destination, and so forth. But, hey, DCSki readers decided Snowshoe was still the most overrated. Yeah, those DCSki readers sure are a fickle bunch.

Overall Favorite Resort:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Honorable Mention:
Timberline Resort, WV, Wisp Resort, MD, Seven Springs, PA, Whitetail Resort, PA, Wintergreen Resort, VA and Canaan Valley Resort, WV

Snowshoe was at the tip of the tongue for many readers as their overall favorite resort. But, a number of other ski areas had their fans, as well -- including Timberline, Wisp, Seven Springs, Whitetail, Wintergreen, and Canaan Valley.

Visit Most Often:

Whitetail Resort, PA

Runner-up:
Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Honorable Mention:
Timberline Resort, WV, Liberty Mountain, PA, Wisp Resort, MD and Wintergreen Resort, VA

Nearly a quarter of survey respondents indicated that Whitetail Resort is the local ski area they visit most often -- the same as in 2003.

Best Web Site:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Seven Springs Resort, PA

Honorable Mention:
Wisp Resort, MD

Readers felt that Snowshoe, Seven Springs, and Wisp had the best on-line presence.

Worst Web Site:

Blue Knob Resort, PA; Timberline Resort, WV; and Canaan Valley Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Massanutten Resort, VA

An equal number of readers felt that Blue Knob, Timberline, and Canaan Valley Resorts had the worst web presence, so they share top billing in this category.

Best Food:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Seven Springs, PA

Honorable Mention:
Wintergreen Resort, VA

Hungry? Snowshoe and Seven Springs offer plenty of ways to satisfy your appetite.

Worst Food:

Timberline Resort, WV

Honorable Mention:
Whitetail Resort, PA, Liberty Mountain, PA, and Canaan Valley Resort, WV

Hungry? You might want to brown bag it if you're heading to Timberline Resort. Whitetail, Liberty, and Canaan Valley also had their detractors in the food department.

Best Bargain:

Canaan Valley Resort, WV

Runner-up:
Blue Knob Resort, PA

Honorable Mention:
Wisp Resort, MD, Seven Springs, PA, and Timberline Resort, WV

Competition was fierce, but in the end, Canaan Valley Resort was viewed as the best bargain among DCSki readers.

Overpriced:

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV

It was no contest in this category: the vast majority of DCSki readers (over 65% in this category) thought that Snowshoe was overpriced. We might point out that Snowshoe won top billing in many categories in this survey; but again, DCSki readers are a fickle bunch.

Keep Meaning to Visit:

Blue Knob Resort, PA

Runner-up:
Elk Mountain, PA

Perhaps from reading many glowing Firsthand Reports on DCSki, a lot of readers aim to one day visit Blue Knob Resort or Elk Mountain. Other resorts that can expect new visitors soon include Wisp, Seven Springs, Snowshoe, Wintergreen, Whitetail, Canaan Valley, and Hidden Valley.
