Resort Overview - reported by M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor

At 5,506 feet above sea level, Beech Mountain is the highest ski resort on the East Coast. Beech is also one of the coldest spots in the southeast, with an average snowfall of 70 inches. For the 2012-2013 season, Beech is celebrating its 45th year anniversary.

Founded in 1964 by Dr. Thomas Brigham, the developer of Snowshoe Mountain, Beech offers 15 trails and an 830-foot vertical. The resort also features a 7,000 square foot ice rink, and a snow tubing area. Snowboarders are welcome on all trails as well as the half pipe and terrain park.

Beech is located near Banner Elk, North Carolina, a two and a half hour drive from Charlotte. At the mountain there are 650 privately owned chalets, townhouses, condominiums, inns, and a bed and breakfast. More restaurants and accommodations can be found in nearby Banner Elk.

Beech Mountain has invested in snowmaking improvements over the past several years, moving towards computerized, automated guns. Modern SMI Automated Polecats now spread snow across every slope at the resort. For the 2011-2012 winter season, Beech Mountain added a new beginner slope, named Play Yard.

Summer Activities

Bike the road Lance Armstrong once trained, hike the numerous mountain trails, or drop a line into Buckeye Lake for a chance to catch mountain trout. Golf, tennis and swimming privileges at the private Beech Mountain Club are available to guests staying in qualified lodgings.

Comments on Beech Mountain
according to a recent newsletter from Beech Mountain Chamber of Commerce forwarded from Gil Adams/Ski Beech: TUBING returns for the 2008-2009 season.
Also in the newsletter, they are upgrading lift 7, the former tube run will be changed to a terrain park and the meadows will become a "park" with beginner-type features and gentle "rollers"; grooming tractors will be replaced with two new machines and a new grooming staff will be added.
There seems to be alot of improvements and maintainance going on at SKI BEECH

i went up there and looked around its a whole new mountian this year the 08-09 season looks great for ski beech. Plus they still have the only high speed lift in the state. i can get like 5 to 6 runs a hour in. any where else in nc i can only get 2 to 3 maybe.

There's a Nursery too!
The resort also offers a nursery for ages infant to age 3, and provides parents with a beeper they can take with 'em on the slopes. I'm going to be writing about it this week on our blog about Beech Mountain. That, together with the re-introduction of Tubing this year, makes Ski Beech a great place for families with young children who would still like to ski!

I'm thinking about taking family skiing this spring. 5 kids - one has been to snowshoe several times. I also need adaptive ski lessons for one child.

Does Beech have adaptive ski services?

Is it still open in Mid-march?
