You can find Timberline Ski Report here: http://www.visitcanaan.com/timberline
There are 2 versions (Interactive Map View / Spreadsheet View) - Feel free to post your updates and lots of photos.
Timberline just opened two more slopes:
Winterset & Winterspur (they are both green) but should make homeowners / slopeside renters even happier. Photos? Anyone?
I know the location of most of the glades mentioned by Fred in the second article, but I have not heard of the "GoPro Glades". Anyone know about this one?
Several scenarios are possible:
GoPro could be the result of so many brand new lines (tree skiing) that the name hasn't yet been determined. Someone could have made it up.
GoPro could very well be official (one day) but right now, it's just the name - so officially it doesn't really "esist".
GoPro could just be a mistaken name.
THere are however, so many other tree skiing lines (official ones) - so my advice: get to know one of the patrol, and simply ask them if it exists, if it's good, if it's public, if you can go.
I like glades that are just there, not 'officially' open and on the map. The latter are all too often not done by skiers and not done right. They get 'Jayed', as in Jay Peak where most of the so called glades are wide open. That's not tree skiing. Come to think of it, when they say glade skiing, rather than tree skiing, be suspicious. Then again, Killington once cut a glade in winter in deep snow. Guess what happened when the snow depth was less? Stump city.!

Every section of the mountain from boundary to boundary (and then some) has been skied in the past 10-20 years. If you've been around, there are no new secrets.
With a few exceptions (Cherry Bowl, Old Dominion, etc.), everyone has their own name for the tree lines they ski. About three years ago, they over-thinned a few lines near the blues. They gave them some weak names and placed them on the trail map. Wgo, you, me and Matt F. skied several of those "new" glades ~3 years ago. After some massive clearing, they appeared on the trail map the next year.
GoPro Glades is a weak-a$$ed name. Sorry. Sounds like a gaper name for what's been skied for decades.

A good example of what I mean is Brook's video posted on another thread.
That looks a lot like several lines I've skied in Cherry Bowl. Similar spacing and tree type.

Spinal Tap is a great name. And been well-used for a while.
Jimmy and K-Will called one section, I think "Almost Dew?" It was Almost <something> We need a Dew Drop In somewhere in there.
I liked some of my names. Thunder from Heaven. Pump House Glades. (More PC than MRG's Sh!t House Glades.) Patroller Training Run. River Runs Through It. Thunder Gulch.
Whit had a name for a couple of faces we skied last year. I need to get the names from him again.
I dont follow the names, but all the lines skiers right of lightnin were cleared out about 10 years ago by a handfull of locals over the course of about a dozen weekends one fall and that work was inspired by the historic 40" day we had the previous season when we skied stuff that truly opened eyes to possibilities(those locals should probably be rewarded with lots of beer every time you see them)...some of these lines sat dormant for 6-7 years and didn't even go until the last few heavy snow years....then the birth of the downhill biking program a few years ago and the cutting of a bunch of new bike trails also made for additional lines as well as tie together some of the work those locals, who deserve the beer, did...all the easy trees cleared out and named to the skiers left of lightinin were cleared by resort a few seasons ago...supposedly the cherry bowl and one or two of the previously easy trees areas to the right of lightnin had some maintanence cleaning work performed on them early this fall...either way stay out of the woods---the snow is no good, its just not fun and its dangerous...you might hit a tree...

Sure, I remember the area you are talking about. Here's a name I heard from Jimmy last year - The Boneyard. Involved a fair amount of walking back to the base area.

I see what you did there.
I'll be sure to look you up and buy you a beer sometime this season.
Van & I spent over 20 hours each (during a 3-day period) in Cherry Bowl. I was so glad to be able to help a little - but even though that was several years ago, I remember what I wanted in return: PASTA!!!!
To each his own... BEER IT IS!

That's side country. Haven't even gotten to talking about that. The tele folks know most of that stuff a lot better.
Well... in any case, it's not like you will ski the glades tomorrow, so check out www.visitcanaan.com today - JUST AN IDEA.

For those who are too much in a rush... or iPhones in the US
In other news work is progressing on the much ballywhood zip line.
Had pretty good day on Wed, conditions were very nice with everything from grabby junk to pristeen pow. I wanted to go Thurs but it had already warmed up and the wind was getting pretty gusty so I socialized a bit then headed home.
Also wanted to post condolences to family and friends on the death of the ski school member.

I always enjoyed 'Upper Almost Everything'
Jimmy and K-Will call one line Upper Almost Everything. (Pretty much trees top to bottom.)
Thanks to David for the reminder.
I think in honor of Scotty and Snowy Luau there should be one called Get Lei'd.

You guys aren't doing your part!
Where are all the photos for the area? Don't tell me that you are NOT skiing... Don't tell me that your cameras aren't functioning... Don't tell me you don't want to make me jealous... I love skiing, and I miss it - so now share more photos, PLEASE.

You sound like my wife. I forgot to take camera and backpack last time. She was not happy that I didn't have action pics of her baby boy.
Voila, What did I miss. Why are you not skiing?

Rumor has it he moved back to La Belle France. But you do have Chamonix, Les Arcs, Tignes, Val d'Isere, Val Thorens, Les Trois Vallees (Meribel, Courchevel, ?), ... A bit more rugged than T-Line.
I plan on skiing once:
a) my tele skis get here
b) I settle in a little more (moving is very expensive)
c) More snow comes
Yeah... it will be in France (most likely) on the border of Geneva & France. It's a little resort (about 2300 feet vertical) and somewhat innexpensive (tickets for about 40 USD), and free lodging to balance my expensive move to France.
Geneva-French border? Are you talking about one of the resorts in the Jura? Good for midweek trips during my time at CERN way back in the day...
Had a good day on new planks/clamps at Tline Friday. The wind abated and the single digits were tolerable with appropriate gear. Good packed pow with grabby manmade mine fields. Looks like they are trying hard to build it back up. Still limited runs but sliding none the less. Sorry no pics.
Latest Update at Timberline:
- Very cold temperatures !
- Upper Dew Drop 1/4 PIPE is now open
** For those who enjoy terrain diversity, and uncrowded slopes **
Vic - Thanks for the update and hope you are enjoying your winter. The interactive map is showing Thunderstruck open top to bottom (the spreadsheet version is accurate and has Upper Thunderstruck shutdown). Upper Almost Heaven should open anyday I would think. They have had big piles store on it for about a week.

Those were the days... what a classic "moment" perfectly captured. Now... let's see more photos!
(JIMK is "off the hook")
Nice form but I think his line is off. His skis should be to the outside of the orange panel gate with the shiny top and his body should be to the inside.
Voila,
Why the move to France? Coming back ever?
Your local posts are missed!

...thats not a panel gate---its an orange slow trail sign...
I got a really good work offer in France. While I didn't see myself moving internationally (old age and all) I would have been pretty stupid to not take the job. I am now doing Virtual Tours (and only virtual tours).
Life is very different (there are lots of good and some bad to go with the flow too). Overall, it's a question of adjusting; like adapting to other sports, other people, etc...
Funny thing, they call me "the american" here. Go figure... but as I have always said, I am a citizen of the world, like it or not.
I miss you guys, still miss skiing (and will for a little while longer), but I am trying to stay busy (hard with only one job - hard & weird actually). Again, adapting.
Now... enough about me. Where the heck are those Timberline Photos? ahahahaha
How's Timberline skiing today? Will be up that way tomorrow.
Is OTW and The Drop skiing well or is it an ice rink?
Best GUESS (until someone tells you how it was)
The Drop will be thin - thinner by tomorrow and Friday.
Off the Wall should be great at about 1pm - since it will be warmer and will most likely soften up. If I am right, you will have epic skiing from 1 to 2:30pm at OTW.
Backcountry should be as I expect it to be: sliding on rock & ice - with about 5 inches drifts / bare spots all over. White Grass might be pretty fun 'cause Chip has been farming it like there's no tomorrow. None-the-less, here's a tentative schedule for the hard core skiers:
Ski Timberline Grooms: from 9am to 12pm - then have lunch.
Ski Timberline OTW from 1 to 2 - then go to White Grass.
Ski White Grass - on the farm. - then have dinner there.
Take the family to Canaan Valley resort - Ice Skating time - and enjoy a repeat the next day. CHEERS -
... I am going kayaking.

The Drop was getting pretty thin in spots Sunday PM; they opened it without blowing much snow on it. There were also some tricky water bars and (marked) punch-through spots.
If they blew snow on it at all this week or they groomed it, that won't be as much an issue. Even with the thin spots, it was tons of fun.
With the transition from warm Sunday to deep freeze, I suspect there'll be some icy spots on both The Drop and OTW. But, you used to be an instructor. Why do you care about icy spots?
JohnL wrote:

Used to, being the key words there. Now I'm just old, washed up, out of shaped indentured servant that usually only sees the light of day through windows in the hospital...

Hell dude did not know you boated. Have phun, too cold here for boating. River is starting to ice over.

Old? I've got ski socks older than you.
@ scottyb: Here's my version of boating... 21-footer, 17" width, 20 pounds - all for the deep ocean - all for the fun http://akaflash.smugmug.com/Portfolio/Surf-Ski/i-hV4kRS2
@ tom: THANKS for the update. Fixed just moments after you yelled at me. :)
Pretty good day today on the groomers. The Drop was thin but more than skiable all of the way down, with a buttery smooth man-made layer on top. Off the Wall was pretty good as well, although my group weren't big fans. Same bumps on the right with whales in the middle and soft snow on the left. Upper Heaven had plenty of snow, although not pushed out yet. Twister was bare. Upper Thunder was bare.
Here's a few of the conditions.
Off the Wall
The Drop
Some leftover snow in the trees
By the way, a good bit of people out there in the afternoon yesterday...
Thursday and Friday were great, skied glades top to bottom. Jimmy was even having phun. They finally opened Almost Heathen after we kept asking. Nearly hero snow wit 45F temp.
Gettin out there.

Go fast, nice wing paddle.
Fun it was. They've done a nice job with the snow they have. Some nice snow skiing alomst top to bottom in the trees between
Bear Claw "Terrain Park" now open WITH FEATURES!
just for heads up---that link says there are currently no terrain parks open...and reports that currently making snow on 8 trails, while at the same saying it is 38 degrees F/website reports 46 degrees F...and link also reports 4 trails are open with natural snow(probably means ungroomed or whales/bumps???)...
You believe the ski report? Bawhahahahahahaha
